SEPTEMBER 16, 2012 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis is pleased to announce the release of the 2012 Catechetical Sunday materials on the theme of the New Evangelization. Catechetical Sunday, which is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in September in parishes across the United States, falls this year on the weekend of September 16, 2012, the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of blessing of catechists used on Catechetical Sunday includes an optional blessing of parents and guardians.

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

At least 66 people attended the Solemn Rite of Exposition at Christ the King on Thursday, September 6, 2012, resulting in over 61 hours of devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. I wish to thank all those who have accepted this call to prayer. You are all a blessing to our parish and to our world. We do still have a shortage of commitments to the 12:00pm-1:00pm hour. It is our goal to have 3-4 people scheduled for each hour to ensure attendance at all times. If you are able to attend Exposition during your lunchhour, please consider doing so, even if it is only for 10-15 minutes. I am sure that it will make the second half of your day a bit easier! If you have any questions regarding adoration, please feel free to contact me at my office, or see me on the weekends at mass. Bill Runge Director of Music and Liturgy

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
St. James asks what our love for Jesus Christ can possibly mean if it does not result in action on behalf of our neighbor. He suggests that that faith is demonstrated most acutely in care for the needy, the suffering, and the underprivileged. Stewardship includes proclaiming the Good News by putting our faith into action on behalf of others. In what ways have we been willing to make sacrifices and renunciations for the sake of Jesus Christ and our neighbor?

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

We would like to offer a hand crocheted or knitted prayer shawl, cape, or laprobe to anyone in the parish who needs to send them to a dear one struggling with life's loss or illness. The shawls are lovingly made so that your loved one may be wrapped with the allencompassing love of Mary, the Mother of Mercy and Care; and God, the Father of Faithfulness, Healing, and Love. At our meetings on Wednesday from 1:00-3:00 PM in the East Room, we will support you through our prayers for restoring health and healing to your loved ones. In the church narthex, there will be a sign with instructions posted to request a prayer shawl. Bonnie Venezio's e-mail address is: [email protected] and we will either e-mail or mail you a Request Form.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Third Follow-Up Mailing and Pledge Reminders
A fourth request for a contribution to the 2012 Catholic Ministries Appeal is in the mail to all parishioners who have not made a contribution. The Appeal provides critical funding to diocesan ministries that serve individuals and parishes throughout the Diocese of Joliet. It also provides refunds of 50% of the cash received (not pledged) over the parish goal to each parish. If you receive this mailing, please respond generously. You will be helping both our diocese and our parish. Also, the seventh monthly reminders have been sent to those that made an in-pew pledge to the Appeal. Those that pledged by direct mail have already received payment coupons. Thank you for your gifts, and please make your payment as soon as possible. For your convenience, you can bring your pledge payments to Mass and place them in the basket. The parish will forward them to the diocese.

Ten Commandments for Eucharistic Reverence

These Ten Commandments are taken from Our Reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist; O Come, Let Us Adore Him by Fr. Charles M. Mangan. Take time this week to work on this one commandment. We will continue to print one commandment each week. For an archive, please view previous bulletins on our website: www.ctklombard.org. VII. Make frequent Spiritual Communions. The cherished practice of the Spiritual Communion in which one invites the Lord into his soul, as He would come during Sacramental Communion, is to be fostered as an act of love and worship. Spiritual Communions involve the desire to receive the Eucharistic Lord when one is impeded from making the usual Sacramental Communion and are made anywhere.

Start gathering up all of the unused or expired medications that you may have in your medicine chest for our next Meds Collection on September 15 & 16 Bring the old prescriptions and OTC meds with you when you come to mass that week-end. A Note of Thanks
From Deacon Peter Robinson

Dear Fellow Members of Christ the King Parish, Praise be to our Lord Jesus Christ and thanks be to God for his undying love for his adopted children. I wish to thank each and every member of the Body of Christ we know as Christ the King Parish; I stand as a living witness to the power of your prayers. As some of you know, I had a very unusual operation on July 11th 2012: It was discovered that I suffer from a rare disorder that causes aneurisms. I developed 12 to 15 aneurisms on the artery that leads to my spleen. In my search for a surgeon, I discovered that my particular condition has never been previously diagnosed. In my search for a solution, I was turned down by four surgeons. The outcome of not having these aneurisms removed would have been grim. By the Grace of God, I found a team of doctors at The University of Chicago Hospital who would take on the challenge. The prognoses varied from minimally-invasive to very serious with the doctors leaning toward the latter. But they would not realize which prognosis was correct until they opened me up. I told them the day of the surgery that, due to my faith and the prayers I knew were being said, they were going to be surprised. When I awoke they were indeed surprised: the pre-surgery imaging had shown one of the aneurisms in a very delicate spot, yet when they went in it was not there. You be the judge. I believe this outcome was due to the pillow of prayers upon which I was lying. They took out the artery, spleen, and gallbladder. I now bear the cross of humility on my abdomen, the cross of St. Peter. I want to thank all of you for your prayers. Though many of you did not know I was going through this, by coming to Mass you prayed for me and all the other faithful people going through trying times. I am reminded at times like this that even Jesus needed help carrying his cross. Thank you for helping me with my cross. Know that through this experience I have become a better Deacon, for now I know the view from the hospital bed. I assure you it is different than what I previously thought. May God bless each and every one of you and your families; I am convinced that, without your help, I would not have survived this ordeal. Yours in the Love of Christ, Deacon Peter Robinson

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Are You Interested in being a part the Catholic community? Each year thousands of adults choose to become Catholics. They come from different backgrounds for different reasons: Some are already Christians from other traditions attracted by the teaching of the Catholic Church and by the example of individual Catholics they know. Some are from another faith or no faith at all who have heard about Jesus, His claim to forgive sin and His promise of eternal life. Some are non-Catholics who have been coming regularly to Mass for years with their Catholic relatives. They wish now to become full members of the Church. Some have had no previous contact with the Church at all but have this inner calling to discover the truth about the most important questions of life. The program is also for Catholics who missed out on the sacraments as children. If any of the above situations applies to you, then the RCIA process is for you. The R.C.I.A. is a process of faith formation for baptized non-Catholics and persons who have never been baptized who may be interested in becoming members of the Catholic Church. The process, done in a group setting, is facilitated by a team of parishioners and a staff member/ priest. Some of our team members became Catholics through this process while others are "life-long Catholics." Those persons who will be attending R.C.I.A. fall into three categories: Catechumens are persons who have not been baptized. They will receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Candidates for full communion with the Catholic Church have been baptized in another Christian tradition and would like to be in full communion with the Catholic Church. They will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Catholics who have been baptized but have not received the other Sacraments of Initiation will receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. For more information contact [email protected]

QUESTIONS WELCOME
USCCB Nationwide Bulletin Insert Summer 2012

ately, the Churchs teaching on contraception has been getting a good deal of public attention in the media. This has naturally led to people asking questions, especially if this teaching is news to them. Even as Catholics, we may be struggling with questions of our own. Its good and helpful for us to acknowledge and explore our questions. And its healthy for us to grapple with God the Fathers desire for our happiness. He understands our human naturehis Son became one of us (Jesus is true God and true man)! Jesus, through his Spirit of wisdom and knowledge, can handle the questions, struggles, or anxieties we bring to him (see Matthew 11:28). Blessed John Paul II, quoting the words of Christ, would often encourage us: Do not be afraid! We should never be afraid to pursue the truth. Maybe youve had some of the following questions, yourself: What does the Church teach about married love? What does this have to do with contraception? Does saying yes to children at the altar mean never using contraception? Are couples expected to leave their family size entirely to chance? What if a couple has a serious reason to avoid having a child? Is there really a difference between using contraception and practicing natural family planning? Can some methods of birth control cause an abortion? What does any of this have to do with my marriage? Consider that in marriage, spouses love not only through words, but through the actions and gestures of their bodies. In particular, the sexual act in marriage speaks of a total commitment to a future togethera future open to welcoming the gift of a child if so blessed and open to fruitful love and service to others. The Churchs teaching on marital sexuality is an invitation for husband and wife to enter more fully into communion with each other and with the blessed Trinity, the fount of life and love. The questions above, and others like them, are answered on a helpful new web page, www.usccb.org/love-and-sexuality. Are we willing to consider the questions that live in our hearts? When the teachings of Christ are understood, embraced and practiced, they can radically change our lives for the better. Christ wants us to have life to the fullest. There is nothing like walking with him. No joy can be compared when we choose to follow him and live in his joy (see John 15:11).

MARRIAGE LOVE & LIFE IN THE DIVINE PLAN 9/19 AND 9/26 IN THE PLC AT 7:00 PM CONTACT: EILEEN MAGGIORE 630-396-6076
There has been much news lately about the Churchs teaching on contraception and sterilization. As Catholics, we may be asking thoughtful questions or struggling to understand this teaching. To learn more, or to see questions others have asked, visit www.usccb.org/love-and-sexuality.
