Relative Advantage of Presentations

The document discusses three advantages of using presentations in the classroom: 1) Presentations appeal to visual learners by displaying information visually; 2) They can engage multiple learning styles by incorporating multimedia like audio, animation, and text; 3) Presentations make it easier for teachers to explain complex concepts and highlight key points in a structured way that helps students retain information. Modern presentation tools also allow for collaboration, with features that enable students to become teachers by creating their own presentations.

Ryan Osweiler EDTECH 541 Relative Advantage of Using Presentations in the Classroom In the article PowerPoint in the Classroom,

the author states that an advantage of using PowerPoint, or presentations, in the classroom, can add a new dimension to learning allowing teachers to explain abstract concepts, while accommodating all learning styles. I tend to think that three distinct advantages of using presentations are implied in that statement: the means of presentation itself, meeting needs of all learners, and the transfer of information. Presentation-based instruction meets a very basic need of many learners: the fact that we are visual in nature. We see things with our eyes and we develop perceptions, attitudes, feelings, and construct understanding as a result. There is research that relates to how different colors and formats affect our thinking and how we process information. Presentations can affect moods based on information, movements, and even color. Further in the PowerPoint in the Classroom article, the author mentions good and bad points of using presentations. This highlights the point that the presentation itself can have a significant impact on a person. To explain concepts, teachers can incorporate animations, drawings, and other media components to emphasize key points. Presentations have built in features that can reach all learners. The obvious advantage for visual learners is the ability to see the information and construct meaning by the presentation format itself. Multimedia can be incorporated for auditory learners as well. Some people love to read and presentations can be made to facilitate that. Good presentations highlight the main points so participants can remember the important information. With the increase in Web 2.0 presentation tools, collaboration is now part of the learning process. Presentation tools such as Google Docs, SlideShare, and SlideRocket allow users to create and edit presentations in real time from anywhere in the world. Built in audio and communication tools allow users to chat via voice and instant message to facilitate the process. These features allow the students to be teachers creating a flipped learning environment. As presentation methods and practices have gone from computer to cloud based, we see that the tools that were originally designed to be instruction based are now becoming learner based. What used to be saved on a computer or flash drive can now be embedded and linked online the transfer of knowledge is increasing as users access presentation information on the Internet.
