Exterior lights
With the beginning of series production of the BMW 3 Series Coup (E92), new functions for exterior lighting are introduced. The bi-xenon headlights are standard equipment.
Bi-xenon headlight
The bi-xenon headlights are standard equipment. The bi-xenon headlight with its smaller design is well suited to the Coup-style body design with the flat engine bonnet.

With an ellipsoid reflector and a 70-mm lens, the light is generated using xenon technology of the latest generation. The swivel module can be adjusted horizontally (Head Light) and vertically (headlight beam height control) using an electromechanical unit. The following control module activates the new functions of the exterior lighting:

System functions
The following system functions are described for the exterior lighting: Cornering light Daytime driving lights Welcome light
Cornering light
The cornering light is linked to the Adaptive Head Light (option 524). The cornering light increases passive and active safety at night. When making a turn or on tight bends (serpentines), the area beside the roadway is given additional illumination. This is also provided on parking. The special styling of the headlight lens prevents dazzle towards the front. Depending on the country, the cornering light is switched on during cornering. Requirements for switching on the cornering light are: Terminal 15 ON Light switch in position A (automatic) Rain/driving light sensor detects dusk or darkness The footwell module uses the following signals to activate the cornering light: Steering angle Turn indicators (not with one-touch indicating) road speed
Index 1
At driving speeds greater than 70 km/h, the cornering light is no longer switched on.
When backing up, the footwell module switches the cornering light on up to a speed of 35 km/h: US version, both sides Other countries, only outer side of bend With the turn indicator switched on: when the vehicle is stationary, the cornering light is switched off automatically after approx. 4 seconds, e.g. waiting at traffic lights. However, the cornering light can be switched on again using the turn indicator / main-beam switch (up to 3 times) until a certain temperature is reached at the reflector. A temperature model protects the headlights against excessive thermal load. After a cooldown phase, the cornering light can be switched on again. The switch-off conditions for the cornering light are country-dependent. A fixed additional reflector with an H3 bulb is built into the main headlight with cornering light.

A central light source supplies both light rings via a reflector split two ways. The inner light ring is illuminated via a reflector. Via another reflector, the light is guided through 2 optic-fibre cables into the other lighting ring. The footwell module (FRM) activates the central light source using pulse width modulation. This means that a higher light intensity is generated for the daytime driving light than for the sidelights. The possibility for dimming means the lighting functions can be implemented with a single bulb. The daytime driving lights can be disabled in the Central Information Display (CID) in the light settings menu. On vehicles without CID, the daytime driving lights can be disabled via the instrument cluster. Exceptions are countries with legally prescribed daytime driving lights.
Welcome light
The welcome light extends to the exterior lighting. Parallel to the interior lighting, the following are activated on unlocking the vehicle: Sidelights Rear light Licence place light Courtesy lighting Instrument lighting (terminal 58g) Side-marker lamps (US version) The welcome light is only switched on if the light switch is in the automatic or low beam position. In positions 0 and 1, the welcome light is not switched on. This means the customer has the possibility to deactivate the welcome light. As childproofing, the welcome light can be activated a maximum of 5 times (20 seconds). The footwell module (FRM) switches the welcome light off after approx. 20 seconds (dimming). The ON period of the welcome light can be extended to a maximum of 60 seconds. To do so, while the welcome light is active press the Unlock button.
