ENGINEERING MECHANICS 100

Description and Operation of Tutorials

1. Number, and timing, of tutorials You will participate in a one-hour Mechanics 100 tutorial each week. This is not an optional activity. Positive participation and performance in tutorials will attract a mark that contributes 15% the overall assessment of Engineering Mechanics 100. The weekly time (and location) of your groups tutorial appears in your timetable as Mechanics Tutorial. 2. Purpose of tutorials Tutorials serve to engender problem-solving skills in the subject and the application of concepts and ideas that is, most often, imparted in lectures and through the lecture notes. It is these skills that will, principally, be assessed in the end-of-semester examination. Tutorials are led by an instructor who will work interactively with the group to achieve this purpose. 3. Organisation and Structure of Tutorials Multiple-choice quiz The first 10 minutes of each tutorial will comprise a multiple-choice quiz answered in silence. The quiz will be marked after the tutorial class and handed back to students along with the recorded marks and quiz model solutions in the following weeks tutorial class. The quiz comprises quick questions with a focus on fundamental concepts as opposed to longer structured questions. The quiz will be based on unit content discussed, via worked questions, at the previous tutorial. Routine coverage of tutorial sheets The following 30 minutes of each tutorial will be led by the instructor who will address questions on the tutorial sheets and respond to student questions relating to these. Note that the quizzes will commence in tuition week 3 of the semester. Prior to then, routine coverage of tutorial sheets will comprise the whole of the tutorial period. 4. Tutorial Sheets You will be provided with a tutorial sheet for each tuition week of the semester. This contains a short set of questions that enables you to apply and practise the material conveyed in the lectures and lecture notes. It is essential that you attempt these questions weekly because they ensure that you have really understood and can apply the most important principles of Mechanics. Do not leave them until the end of semester because Mechanics is a progressive subject each topic builds upon understanding of the previous topics. If you do get stuck on a tutorial-sheet question, you will have the opportunity to have your difficulties overcome in the tutorial of course, this will only happen if you ask! Subsequent to the tutorial session, model solutions to each tutorial sheet will be posted on Blackboard; use this as a learning resource. However, remember that reading a solution written by somebody else does

not mean that you can perform it. After reading a solution, turn it over, and attempt the question again to check that you have really understood. Finally, the questions on the tutorial sheets provide you with guidance as to what types, and level of difficulty, of questions will appear in the end-of-semester examination. 5. Assessment Tutorial work is assessed through the weekly quizzes. The total tutorial mark comprises 15% of the unit mark; hence each quiz is worth 1.5% of the unit mark.
