* Click on the subheading to view image Providing health care In December 2005, APPM introduced a Medical Mobile Van Service with an objective of providing relatively quick medical aid to the people living in the interior parts of East Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam Districts. Medicines worth Rs. 1.75 lakhs were distributed to around 200 villages between December 2005 and March 2006. The Company has budgeted funds worth Rs. 12 lakhs for the FY 2006-07 to strengthen the MMVS initiative. APPM has also shown its concern for animals by donating 40 GI Tubular Trevises worth Rs. 2 lakhs to various Veterinary hospitals. Motivating the community to participate in various Aids Awareness Programmes APPM has been making constant efforts to increase awareness among people about HIV and AIDS through rallies being carried out by school children and its employees in various near by towns and is helping remove various misconceptions relating to HIV and AIDS.

Caring for children through various initiatives in the education arena APPM has established two English Medium High Schools for its employees children as well as for the local kids under the guidance of the APPM Educational and Cultural Society. Every year it contributes Rs. 8 lakhs to ensure smooth functioning of these schools. Last year, a fund of Rs 2 lakhs was created through which various books and uniforms were gifted to the children belonging to the economically weaker sections of the society. Beside financial support, APPMs employees have been providing guidance to more than 250 students from various graduate, post-graduate & professional colleges and universities. Supporting cultural, religious and sports events Being located on the banks of the river Godavari and in the town of Rajahmundry the ancient capital of culture and arts, APPM and its employees never miss an opportunity to participate in the various cultural events held in the city. The company contributed Rs. 5 lakhs for conducting the Godavari Uthsava which was held from the 24th to the 27th of January 2006 and its employees actively participated in the Pushkaram event which is held in a 12 year cycle. APPM on a yearly basis also gives finance to various local sports persons and sports events. Rendering various services to the needy APPM has been at the forefront of rendering financial and non-financial assistance whenever the need arises. In the past, it had helped in constructing a shed at a local leprosy centre, donating a van to the Ramakrishna Mission for rendering mobile medical services, supplying utensils, clothes and wet grinder to Sri Kandukuri Veersalingam State Home, donating money to the Chief Minister Relief Fund for Tsunami victims, donating funds for the rehabilitation of poor children with heart

diseases and supplying food packets, clothes and utensils to flood and fire victims in the city of Rajahmundry

The West Coast Paper Mills Ltd. supports the local community in the villages surrounding the mill in a number of ways which include employment, health care, education, and various other facilities. The initiatives that we have undertaken over the years under our corporate social responsibility involve more than direct and indirect employment. Our social activities have made us an integral part of the lives of people living nearby. We have successfully maintained the villages of Dandeli through initiatives that have touched the lives of thousands in the region. WCPM maintains a colony in Dandeli that is self-sufficient with the help of facilities like hospital, shopping complex, temple, club, theatre, and a cable TV network. JalNirmanYojna is a project undertaken by the district administration and is partly funded by The West Coast Paper Mills Ltd. Our CSR initiatives for the villages include the following: water supply projects school uniform distributions subsidized notebook distributions cattle vaccination programmes distributions of medicines medical facilities such as mobile health care units drinking water arrangements drinking water arrangements for cattle organizing social awareness programmes The Dandeli Education Society has been receiving our financial support regularly since 1963. This society comprises the premier educational network in Dandeli as it runs a number of educational institutions in the area. These include primary education, two pre-university colleges and a degree college. Professional courses on industrial chemistry, functional English, microbiology, pulp and paper technology, and many others are conducted by the society with the help for our CSR wing. The CSR wing of WCPM also works towards the protection and conservation of the environment in a number of ways. Our research and development wing has taken measures to stabilize fly-ash dumps through biological means so as to reduce air pollution in the area surrounding the mill. We also promote agroforestry among local landholders.

Newspaper in India and its need exactly match with the need of food by the people at large barring with those who still struggle for both ends meals. And the publishers of newspapers understanding the growth happening in this field are leaving no loose threads in trying to fulfill this need. Further, it will also be interested to note that what accounts for the major component in producing a newspaper is none other than NEWSPRINT. In a way the newsprint acts as a lifeline in producing a newspaper whether it is a daily, weekly or fortnightly. This important component - newsprint - is manufactured indigenously but still lot comes from overseas. The domestic manufacturers are few in numbers but the leading tag goes to Emami Paper Mills which commands an impressive share of 15 percent of the total newsprint production in India. Panoramic view of Emami's manufacturing plant at Balasore Manufacturing newsprint is a challenge in India where there is a major difference in demand and supply and domestic manufacturing firms have to depend completely on overseas firms for inputs required for production, paying heavy duties. But Emami Paper Mills Limited (EPML) is competent enough to face such challenge and compete in the newsprint market maintaining constant growth since last ten years when they started producing newsprint. Presently, operating with three lines of paper making machines, they have been producing the best quality newsprint in India.

Emami Paper Mills also fullfills corporate social responsibility through various activities such as tree plantation and adoption of villages. Seen is insurance awareness camp at Fulkiary, a village addopted by the company.

However, visit to a paper manufacturing plant is itself an educational activity but to understand the process as how old newspapers are converted into fresh rolls of newsprint is yet another important experience which we could take after reaching the paper manufacturing plant of Emami Paper Mills. Located at Balasore - a city with over 1.25 lac population, located in the state of Orissa, about 194 kilometres north of the state capital Bhubaneswar, and in eastern India, on National Highway-60, a four lane express way which connects Balasore to Kolkata EPMLs plant is appreciable initiative by the Emami group of companies to take care of environment and ecological issues. Awarded with ISO-9001, ISO-14001, 18001 and TPM excellence and consistency certification, this plant is an eco-friendly 100 percent waste paper-based manufacturing facility, with a capacity of 1,14,000 TPA of newsprint and 16,000 TPA of writing and printing grade of paper. The plant is equipped with 20 MW co-

generation units to meet the 100 percent power and steam requirement for the process. MBS Nair, director (operation) of the company and who is incidentally also current president of IPPTA stated, Newsprint demand in India is increasing by seven percent per year. But to improve domestic production level to meet the above mentioned demand, raw material sourcing has been a major issue. And it is also not possible to collect 100 percent of old newspapers from our country due to their conventional usage for various purposes such as wrapping of food, fruits, snacks, etc instead of coming to newsprint manufacturers for recycling. We generally prefer English newspapers over vernacular because of better paper quality used.

& Medium Newspapers Federation, New Established in 1983, Emami Paper Mills was primarily as an Delhi. agro based unit for manufacturing writing and printing paper, with an installed capacity of about 15 tonnes per day. But the company has expanded their capacity by adding two more newsprint machines in phased manner so as to meet the sustainable stability in the market. S Acharya, senior general manager (production), Emami Paper Mills informed, We produce writing and printing paper within the range of 52-110 gsm. While newsprint is of 45 gsm and with 1.5 bulk, producing final width of 3.5 metre. Around 75-80 percent newspaper waste is arranged from India and 20-25 percent paper waste from overseas. Their Machine-I is for writing and printing paper (Cream Wove, Map litho, Ledger, etc) having capacity of 16,000 TPA, with speed of 320 MPM. Another two machines are for newsprint. Installed in the year 1996, Machine-II (deckle width: 2,850 mm), with capacity 28,500 TPA, provides speed up to 490 MPM. While commissioned in the year 2007, Machine-III (deckle width: 3,600 mm) has capacity of 85,000 TPA with speed up to 1,120 MPM. This paper machine is having state-of-the-art features with most advanced online automation provided by Honeywell, USA and ABB coupled with machinery from Beloit, Kadant Inc & Voith. Currently running at 1,105 meter per minute, it is the fastest machine in India running with 100 percent recycled pulp and making 45 gsm newsprint. The paper machine is having most advanced forming zone of BelBaie IV gap former from Beloit, USA. Emami is the only mill in India which has BelBaie IV wire section.

Government support needed to enhance newsprint production in our country

says PS Patwari, executive director, Emami Paper Mills, in an informal interaction with SK Khurana during his recent visit to New Delhi. Talking about how Government can help newsprint manufacturers to perform better to meet the demand, PS Patwari said, Government policy is not that healthy in our country. Presently, in India, total paper production is around 10 million tonnes, out of which newsprint production is one million tonnes. While the domestic requirement of newsprint is 2.2 million tonnes (In next 10 years, it may double up to five million tonnes). Resultantly, in future, newsprint supply demand scenario is going to be affected worstly with constantly increasing demand. Domestic manufactures have to pay duty on importing inputs (pulp, waste paper, chemicals machinery, etc) for newsprint production, but there is no duty on importing finished newsprint from overseas manufacturers thus making the situation more critical for them, he added further. Earlier being under the Government control, all major newsprint mills in the country could not perform effectively. Resultantly, some of them have to terminate their newsprint production and others are managing to continue somehow. So, there is an essential need of government support to create optimum climate for domestic manufacturers, so as they can contribute to improve their newsprint supply phenomenon in India, mentioned Patwari with a fresh ray of hope. The CSR projects focus on promoting Economic, Social, Environmental and Cultural growth of the community at large in an equitable and sustainable manner in the peripheral areas around the factories. Over the years, we have worked with dedication towards enriching lives across the community. The company is consistently taking up various community welfare initiatives for the benefit of the people. A sense of responsibility towards society is inherent to Emamis concept of entrepreneurship. Under CSR, the major thrust areas include education, health care, drinking water and community service schemes to neighbouring villages and supporting them during natural calamities.

Camps:

Our healthcare activities range from operating local first aid centers, free health care services and health camps through which we also provide ayurvedic, homeopathic and allopathic medicines. Education Infrastructural support has been provided to 30 schools in the neighbouring villages covering 2500 students and distributed notebooks, given scholarship to meritorious students, supplied accessories like desks, benches, fans, water filter etc. Besides, regular contribution made to the Friends of Tribals Society (FTS) for education to tribals in rural areas and also to various schools and Colleges. The company also sponsored tribal students for their better education. Villages Adoption

The company adopted Fulkiari village, comprising 200 villagers living below the poverty level, having single-room temporary houses with no toilets, for onward development with a significant expenditure covering the following activities: Toilets, insurance cover, safe drinking water with water filters, bore wells, education for children, medical and health camps and womens self-employment. Emami continuously provides Scholarship to the meritorious students of Remuna Refugee

A Prasad Bhandara was arranged for the public and employees during Bhagwat (on completion of 25th years of Emami Paper Mills). Around 7000-10000 people have taken the Bhojan daily for 7-8 days. Community Service

In the community service schemes, Emami is always ahead in installing and maintaining tube wells, street lights, road repairs, road construction, sponsoring sports activities, mass marriages, distributing blankets in winter, extending helping hand to orphanage homes to meet their requirements, religious and social activities through local groups. The Company undertook the construction and renovation of Temples in the nearby villages. The Companys CSR activities and its continuing policy of social and community services have made a visible impact in the upliftment of local villages in the vicinity of its plant at Balgopalopur and surrounding areas. At Emami Paper, we touch the lives of communities in the following ways:

The Contribution for an intensive care unit in the District headquarters Hospital, Balasore.

The adoption of village in the proximity to transform it into a model showpiece covering the provision of drinking water, street lighting, motor able roads, acceptable sanitation, informed healthcare and adequate education.

The contribution for the creation and maintenance of ponds, wells, street lighting, road repair, the provision for facilities for games, religious and social activities through contribution to local clubs. The Company has also constructed culverts in nearby villages for easy transportation.

Emami operates a full - equipped first aid center with two full-time doctors and four pharmacists. Apart from attending to the needs of employees and their families, the service is also dispensed to the needy people living in the adjoining areas.

The company also conducts free Hepatatis-B and Eye camps periodically for

employees and local population. All pre and post operative care for cataract treatment is dispensed for free of cost.

The Company provides cold lemon water to the general public during the summer months to provide relief from heat; it also provides coolers for drinking water across various places of worship.

Continuing its efforts to spread literacy across the adjoining villages, Emami Paper has undertaken the following initiatives:

Substantial contribution for the construction of building for Degree College at Remuna, Orissa.. Free distribution of exercise notebooks to the students of nearby schools. Scholarships top meritorious and under-privileges students of nearby schools.

Emami Paper has invested substantially in various pollution control measures including an effluent treatment plant. Moreover, trees and medicinal plants are also planted to ensure the effective development of a greenbelt in and around the Company's plant. In its bid to create a green and clean environment, the Company has acquired 80 acres of land in the surrounding areas. It has already undertaken large scale medicinal plantations across the vast land. As a result, several villagers have been provided employment on a daily basis. Emami has been awarded the Excellence Award for Socio Cultural Development in Balasore.
