Helensburgh Hig
Celebrating 125 Years
In 1987 Helensburgh School celebrated 100 years of
education, it was a huge milestone with a big celebration
planned. Mr Neville King was the Principal and Mrs Trish
Grainger was the Infants Mistress, the school numbers had
increased to 423 with 16 classes from Kinder to 6th class.
Our birthday
cake!
On Saturday 12th September 1987 the day started with
a huge march from the centre of the town to the
school with older ex students from the early 1920's
leading the way in vintage cars.
Then every decade proudly carried their
banner and marched all the way to the school
with their old school friends, the teachers at
the school at the time marched with their
students class by class Kinder - 6th class.
There were brass bands, Scottish bands and
the local miners band in the parade, and
nearly every local resident not in the parade
lined the route cheering us on. The township
was empty as everyone came to the school.
People came from all over Australia and even
overseas to come back to their childhood
school.
We then had a big fete/
get together. The eldest
lady that day who had
been a student at the
school was 91 years old
and the youngest was
just 5!!!

In 1968, Mr Don Boyle was Headmaster. Due
to an increase in numbers, the school also had
an !nfants' Nistress, Nrs Rona Powell. The
school was progressing rapidly and in the mid
1970's a new brick double room was built for
Kindergarten. As Helensburgh Public School
flourished and grew, the school was recognised
and respected by other schools and
communities. The school uniform was changed
from the older fashioned grey pinafore to a
more modern green check dress. School
numbers rose to 386.
On the Sunday we had a bush dance in the playground with
lots of music, barbeque, damper with `cocky's joy' (golden
syrup) and billy tea. The weekend was great fun for everyone
catching up, seeing old school friends and reminiscing. Schools
are about learning, but also about friendships and happy
memories!
We would like to Acknowledge the Wodi Wodi people who are the Traditional Custodians of this Land on which our school stands upon. We would also like to pay respect to the
Elders both past and present of the Dharawal Nation and extend that respect to other Aboriginals present.

PRINCIPAL REPORT
SCHOOL FETE
This year our school fete will be held this Saturday 15
September one of our a special events in our 125
th
year.
Our fete committee has been working all year to provide
for our community an amazing event. As with all school
activities more volunteers are needed. All reports indicate
that this year's fete will be amazing so come along and
have a fabulous time. The success of such a large event
depends on the number of people willing to help. If you
can spare an hour or even two on fete day working on a
stall please contact your class parent coordinator or Gina
Krohn on 4294 1371
GRANDPARENTS DAY
Parents should have received a copy of the program for
Grandparents Day 2012. !t outlines the day's activities and
a description of the events centred around our classrooms
and performing arts concert. Morning tea will be provided
by the P & C although a gold coin donation would be
appreciated. A feature of the day will be a picnic lunch in
the school grounds for grandparents and their
grandchildren. A BBQ will be operating throughout the
day. Grandparents are reminded that if you are taking
your grandchild out of school following the events you will
be required to sign them out. Class teachers have rolls
especially for this purpose. Parents must have provided
permission to their class teacher for grandparents to sign
out their grandchildren.
STUDENT SICKNESS
Last week saw a steep increase in the number of students
who arrived at school unwell or who fell ill at school.
Presently, we have a nasty gastric bug in our school
community. I would remind parents to instruct their
children in the correct method of hand washing
particularly after toileting and before eating. We would like
to keep this horrible vomiting bug under control so any
assistance parents can give would be appreciated. If your
child is unwell please do not send them to school.
YEAR 3 & 5 NAPLAN RESULTS
The school has been advised that parents of students in
Years 3 and 5 should receive their child's NAPLAN results
sometime during the week commencing 17 September.
The school will provide an opportunity for parents to
discuss their child's results early next term with your
child's teacher once the school has done a complete
analysis of the results. The school's results will also be
published on the MYSchool website later in the year.

Environmental News
The goal of yesterday's Spring Working Bee
was to reduce fire hazard by collecting loose
timber from our school area. Our hardworking
volunteers gathered a few ute loads worth! The
fruits of their labour, bundled kindling, will
available for free at the RFS stand Saturday's
Fete. Thank you parents, enthusiastic children
and teachers for your wonderful help - it really
felt like a Spring clean!
More thank yous...to Chris Bye from CB
Landscaping for repairing the stone wall near
our Lukin St entrance. Sandy has topped up
the garden with plants from Sunrise Nursery.
The result is much safer for our children, and
definitely more attractive.
