Leviathan: The Twisting Spirit Isaiah 27:1

Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with His severe sword, great and strong, Will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent; And He will slay the reptile that is in the sea. Introduction: There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God Psalms 46:4 The promise to all of us in the church is the flow of Gods presence. This flow is pictured by river and streams. John 7:37-39 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. When we gather in unity and worship, streams flow together from our hearts and ministry power flows. There should be a flow in your spirit. Yet often the flow is hindered by hidden spirits. Over the next several weeks we will expose and expel these spirits. The first one we will deal with is Leviathan. Scriptural reference to Leviathan:

Job 3:8 May those curse it who curse the day, Those who are ready to arouse Leviathan. Job 41:1-6 "Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook, Or snare his tongue with a line which you lower? 2 Can you put a reed through his nose, Or pierce his jaw with a hook? 3 Will he make many supplications to you? Will he speak softly to you? 4 Will he make a covenant with you? Will you take him as a servant forever? 5 Will you play with him as with a bird, Or will you leash him for your maidens? 6 Will your companions make a banquet of him? Will they apportion him among the merchants? Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with His severe sword, great and strong, Will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent; And He will slay the reptile that is in the sea. Psalms 104:26 There the ships sail about; There is that Leviathan Which You have made to play there. Here is an animal that is symbolic of evil. This Leviathan is a giant spirit that blocks the flow of Gods purpose, power and prosperity in your life.

The meaning of Leviathan The word literally means to twist. He is the monster demonic force that twists everything to hinder the flow of God. He is called the twisting serpent. According to Eastons Bible Dictionary, Leviathan is used figuratively for a cruel enemy. Brow-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon says that this is a dragon not unlike a dinosaur. A beast that is hostile to Gods people. For us, Leviathan and his characteristics are a picture of a large but hidden enemy in the church that chokes off the flow! I. He is a formidable spirit Job 41:1-3 "Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook, Or snare his tongue with a line which you lower? 2 Can you put a reed through his nose, Or pierce his jaw with a hook? 3 Will he make many supplications to you? Will he speak softly to you? Here is an enemy that cannot be caught or detected through natural means. Job 41:8-9 Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle Never do it again! 9 Indeed, any hope of overcoming him is false; Shall one not be overwhelmed at the sight of him? In the flesh no human can do battle with him. Here is church enemy #1!

II.

He is a hidden spirit Job 41:1 "Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook, Or snare his tongue with a line which you lower? He is hidden underneath the water! Water in the Bible represents several things: 1) 2) 3) The word The flow of Gods will The mass of humanity

Leviathan tries to hide where the word and the flow of Gods spirit are moving among people. We often do not observe his work until many are hurt. He is hidden until exposed by God. III. He will not live in covenant Job 41:4 Will he make a covenant with you? Will you take him as a servant forever? When someone is affected by this spirit, it destroys covenant relationships. This spirit breaks up marriages, business partnerships, friendships and worst of all, churches. If you cannot get along, it may be Leviathan. Now stay with me I will show you in a moment that this is nobodys fault. IV. He twists the truth Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with His severe sword, great and strong, Will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent; And He will slay the reptile that is in the sea.

Here is how this deceiving spirit operates. Something is said from the Word and before you hear it, he twists it! You hear it wrong. Maybe you speak to your mate about an issue meaning good but he or she is angered by it. Some decision is made in church and it is what it is; yet you feel there must be more or someone infected with Leviathan twists what has been said and creates division. (Remember Adam and Eve.) This serpent gets between you and me and twists the truth! He gets between friends and twists! He gets between marital partners and twists! He gets into church life and twists! When a crocodile takes its pray it twists it around until it takes the life out of it. The enemy will take good people and twist them until confusion comes. V. He attacks and flees Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with His severe sword, great and strong, Will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent; And He will slay the reptile that is in the sea. This is why people will often leave a mate, leave a church and leave a friendship! He puts a spirit of fleeing in them.

This is why there is so much confusion and turmoil. He puts a quitting and running attitude in people. VI. This enemy can be defeated Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with His severe sword, great and strong, Will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent; And He will slay the reptile that is in the sea. He is defeated by the sword. Notice the sword is severe, great and strong! 1) 2) The Spirit and the Word Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; A discerning sword Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. This sword helps you recognize Leviathan; you cannot without the Holy Spirit and the Word. When the church is determined to let Jesus speak, this sword will operate and Leviathan will flee! Revelation 1:16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.

He fights for the church with this sword. Revelation 2:16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth. Conclusion: I want you to know that a lot of this stuff of division needs to be laid at the feet of the enemy. So much hurt and misunderstanding when things get twisted. What must we do? Realize our pride is from the enemy. Look at the last scripture about Leviathan. Job 41:34 He beholds every high thing; He is king over all the children of pride." He is king of all pride? Pride keep us away from God. Pride causes us to be offended easily. Pride causes us to fall. Pride keeps us from Gods plan. 2 Peter 3:16-18 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

Notice these words twist, destruction, fall, led away the work of Leviathan! Here is the answer GROW. THROUGH THE SCRIPTURE IN GRACE forgive, love IN KNOWLEDGE intimacy, Jesus in you
