1. (a) A charge of 0.2 micro coulombs is acted upon by a force of 0.1Nw.in the
presence of another charge of 0.45µc. Determine the distance between the two
charges. Take the medium as air. [8M]
(b) What is the electric field intensity at a distance of 20cm from a charge of 0.2
micro coulombs in a vaccum. [8M]
2. (a) What is meant by dielectric polarization. How is it effected by changing the
dielectric material. [8M]
(b) A parallel plate capacitor has its dielectric changed from εr1 =2 to εr2 =6. It
is noted that the stored energy remains fixed. Examine the changes if any in
V, C, D, E, Q. [8M]
3. (a) Two magnetic materials with relative permeabilities 500 and 300 are separated
by aplane boundary . The magnetic field in the first material makes an angle
of 30 degree with a normal to the plane boundary. Find the corresponding
angle in the second material. [8M]
(b) A series magnetic circuit consisting 1m length of air , 10 cm length of cast
iron ( µr = 200 ) and 10 cm length of high permeability material ( µr = 6000)
. All having the cross section area of 10 cm3 . If the circuit has total mmf of
1200 AT. Calculate the stored energy in each part of the magnetic circuit.[8M]
4. (a) Given E = Em sin(ωt -βz)ay in free space, find D, B and H. [8M]
(b) A current sheet K= (8/µ0 ) ay (A/m), at x = 0 separates region 1, x < 0 and
µr1 = 3, from region 2, x > 0 and µr2 = 1. Given H1 = (10/µ0 ) (ay + az )

5. (a) Obtain Maxwell’s equations using phasor notation applicable for sinusoidal
time variations. [8M]
(b) Using the equation of E and H for a plane electromagnetic wave in good
conductors, verify that all of Maxwell’s equations apply. [8M]
6. (a) Write the constitutive relationships, hence explain microscopic ohm’s law.[6M]
(b) For the wave propagating in good dielectrics, derive the expression for intrinsic
impedance of a good dielectric. [10M]
7. (a) For the case of reflection by a perfect dielectric with oblique incidence, define
explain the two possible polarizations with appropriate sketches, and establish
the snells Laws. [12M]

2. (a) Derive Poisson’s and Laplace’s equations from fundamentals. [8M]

(b) Three equal positive charges are placed at the corners of an equilateral triangle
with a side of ‘d’ meters. Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric
field at the point bisecting each side of the equilateral triangle. [8M]

2. Derive an expression for the capacitance of a pair of co-axial cylinders of radii r1


and r2 and length l. The dielectric is air and the outside cylinder is earthed. A
cable has core diameter of 2.5cm and impregnated paper insulation of thickness of
2.13 cm and relative permittivity 3.5. Determine the capacitance of the cable per
