Reading Lessons

The poem asks a series of "why" questions about natural phenomena that a child might ask, and the mother responds that God created all things. It then discusses how Jesus, as an infant, had a humble birth in a stable and was cared for by shepherds, unlike what might be expected for the Son of God, in order to save humanity from sin. The poem hopes the child will grow up knowing and loving God as their redeemer.

Tell me, Mother, tell me why Why do the birds stay in the sky?

And why are grown-up people tall, While Jean and John and I are small? Why does the rain fall? Why does the moon shine? Why do the clouds move? And why does the wind whine? Why does it get dark? Why is a puddle wet? Why is the snow white? And why does the sun set? Why does the baby cry? Why do I yawn? Why do I sleep at night And wake up with the dawn? Little child, Ill tell you why: God wills all these things to be. He made the earth and sea and sky, Just as He made you and me.

CRADLE HYMN Isaac Watts
Hush my dear, lie still and slumber, holy angels guard thy bed, Heavenly blessings without number, gently falling on thy head. Sleep my babe, thy food and raiment house and home thy friends provide, All without your care or payment, all your wants are well supplied.

How much better you are attended, than the Son of God could be, When from heaven he descended, and became a child like thee. Soft and easy is your cradle, Coarse and hard your Saviour lay, When his birthplace was a stable, and his softest bed was hay. Blessed Babe! What glorious features spotless fair, divinely bright! Must he dwell with brutal creatures, how could angels bear the sight! Was there nothing but a manger, cursed sinners could afford, To receive the heavenly stranger; did they thus affront their Lord. Soft my child I did not chide thee, though my song may sound too hard; Tis your mother sits beside thee, and her arms shall be thy guard. Yet to read the shameful story, How the Jews abused their King,

How they served the Lord of glory, makes me angry while I sing. See the kinder shepherds round him, telling wonders from the sky; There they sought him, there they found him, with his Virgin Mother by. See the lovely Babe a dressing; lovely infant how he smiled! When he wept, the Mothers blessing soothed and hushed the holy child. Lo! he slumbers in his manger, where the horned oxen fed; Peace my darling heres no danger heres no oxen near your bed. Twas to save you, child from dying, save my dear from burning flame, Bitter groans and endless crying, that your blest Redeemer came. Mayest you live to know and fear him, trust and love him all your days! Then go dwell forever near him, see his face and sing his praise.
