Click onto Microsoft Excel.

Finding the next few terms in a sequence


1) Input the number 1 into cell A1 then 3 into the cell B1 and 5 into the cell C1.

2) Highlight all then put the cursor into the bottom right hand corner of cell A3. You
should get a black cross.

3) Drag this along until A6 and you will get the next 3 terms in the sequence.

4) Question: Without using Excel - What would the 7th, 8th and 9th terms of the
sequence be?

5) Test using Excel by repeating steps 2 and 3.


Finding missing terms in a sequence
a) Input 5 into A2, 9 into B2, 13 into C2, leave D2 blank, 21 into E2 and 25 into F2

b) Question : Without using Excel - What would the 4th term of the sequence be?

c) Test using Excel by repeating steps 2 and 3

Generating a sequence from a rule

We want to find the sequence starting at 1 with the rule add 4


i. Input the 1 into A4

ii. Click the cell B4 then, in the box at the top of the screen with fx input the
following formula: =SUM(A4+4)

iii. You should get the next term of the sequence; 5.

iv. Question : Without using Excel - What should the next 3 terms of the sequence
be?

v. Highlight cell B4 and put the cursor in the bottom left hand corner and drag along
until you get to cell E4. You should have the first 5 terms in the sequence.
vi. Input 3 into cell A5

vii. Click the cell B5 then, in the box at the top of the screen with fx input the
following formula: =SUM(2*A5). * Means mutiply

viii. Highlight cell B5 and put the cursor in the bottom left hand corner and drag along
until you get to cell E5. You should have the first 5 terms in the sequence.

Task
Using the steps already given complete the following using Excel:

 Find the next 3 terms for the sequence beginning 2, 5, 8


 Find the next 3 terms for the sequence beginning 0, 10, 20
 Find the next 3 terms for the sequence beginning 20, 10, 5,
Extension
 Find the next 3 terms for the sequence beginning 4, 2, 0
 Find the next 3 terms for the sequence beginning -5, -10, -15

 Find the first 5 terms for the sequence starting at 6 with rule add 3
 Find the first 5 terms for the sequence starting at 4 with rule add 5
 Find the first 5 terms for the sequence starting at 1 with rule multiply 3
Extension
 Find the first 5 terms for the sequence starting at 10 with rule divide 5
 Find the first 5 terms for the sequence starting at 2 with rule divide 2
 Find the first 5 terms for the sequence starting at 2 with rule multiply 2 add 1
