Assignment 02

This document provides instructions for Assignment 2 of the Mathematics 250 course. It outlines requirements such as attaching a cover sheet, submitting assignments by the due date and time, showing all working, and using exact values. It then presents definitions, vectors, matrices, and problems related to linear algebra concepts like bases of subspaces, column space, nullspace, and projections. Students are asked to find bases, solve homogeneous systems of equations, prove statements about column spaces, show linear independence, and decompose vectors into components of given subspaces.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS Maths 250 Assignment 2 Due: 28/8/09

Please attach a filled in cover sheet to the front of your assignment. Put your assignment in the correct box outside the SRC by 4pm on the due date. Late assignments or assignments put in the wrong box will not be marked. While you may use calculators in assignments and tutorials, to get full marks you must SHOW ALL WORKING and use EXACT VALUES wherever possible. Note: we assume that you can do row operations, so rather than present longwinded row reductions, please just show the original matrix and its reduced row echelon form, which you may obtain from a calculator or via Matlab.

1. (a) Write down the definition of a basis for a subspace U. (b) (i) Is S above a basis for W? Give reasons for your answer. (ii) {v 1 , v 2 , v 3 } above is not a basis for IR5. Explain why not. (iii) Extend {v 1 , v 2 , v 3 } to a basis for IR . (c) (i) Find bases for col(M), null(M), row(M) and null(M ). (ii) Then use your results in (i) to find bases for col(MT), row(MT), (col( M )) , (row ( M )) . 2. Find, using W given above: (i) A matrix A for which null(A) = W. (ii) A matrix B for which row(B) = W. (iii) A matrix C for which col(C) = W. (iv) A matrix D for which (col( D ))

(v) Write down a homogeneous system of linear equations for which the solution space is W . 3. Let A and B be n n matrices. Are the following statements true for all such matrices? (i) col(AB) col(A) (ii) col(BA) col(A) . Your answer must be supported by convincing arguments.

4. [An old test question]. Let {u 1 , u 2 , L , u k

U 2 = span( v 3 , v 4 } (using the vectors given at the top of the

linearly independent. 5. (a) Given U 1 = span( v 1 , v 2 } and page), find dim( U 1 U 2 ).
