Name of The Experiment:: Figure 1: Block Diagram of PAM Signal
Objective:
This experiment is designed to simulate the waveshape of Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM) using PSpice Schematics.
Theory:
Pulse amplitude modulation is a technique of communication in which, high frequency square wave is modulated by low frequency analog signal. The pulses sample the modulating signal. The PAM signal is nothing but the high frequency square wave in which the amplitude of each pulse is equal to that of the information signal at that respective sampling instant. In Pulse Amplitude Modulation, the signal is sampled at regular intervals and the amplitude of each sample is made proportional to the amplitude of the signal at that instant of sampling. This amplitude of each sample is hold for the sample duration to make pulses flat top. This provides the pulse modulated signal output at the PAM OUTPUT Post. The pulse is flat top sampled. Flat top sampled PAM signal can be passed through 4th order butter worth filter. It gives demodulated output at filter output post, which is same as original signal. The Pulse Amplitude Demodulator consists of Active Low Pass Butter worth filter. It filters out the sampling frequency and their harmonics from the modulated signal and recovers the base band by integrated action.
Procedure:
1. Open the Pspice AD Lite software by double clicking its icon. 2. Refer to the block diagram and carry out the following connection. 3. Where the message signal V1 (m(t)) should be represented by VSIN source in PSpice Schematics with amplitude of 2V and frequency 200Hz. 4. And the carrier signal V2 (c(t)) should be represented by VPULSE source in PSpice Schematics with V1=0V,V2=1V, TD=0, TR=2NS, TF=2NS, PW=0.2ms and PER=0.4ms. 5. The load resistance ,R1=1ohm 6. Select Run and If there is no error go to Trace menu and click add trace. Enter the output node voltage and click ok then the output will display 7. Observe various waveforms as mentioned below.
Simulation Result:
Thus the net list for the given pulse amplitude modulation was written and the output waveforms were plotted using probe statements.
Conclusion:
1. The bandwidth for transmission of PAM signalis very very large compared to its maximum
frequency content. 2. The Amplitude of PAM Pulses varies accordingly to modulated signal. Therefore interference of noise is maximum for the PAM signal and this noise cannot be removed very easily. 3. Since amplitude of PAM signal varies, this also varies the peak power required by the transmitter with modulating signal.
