The 2009 INVITATIONAL ART EDUCATION FAIR

Celebrating Creative Achievement In The Atlanta Public Schools

Summary And Assessment

Because of its impact on student success, parental support for the visual arts continues to grow.

THE VISUAL ARTS IN THE ATLANTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The 3rd Annual Invitational Art Education Fair was held on May 1st, 2009. A project of the professional learning community at M. Agnes Jones (MAJ) Elementary School, the Invitational Art Education Fair featured artwork by over 700 students and celebrated two McCartheyDressman Art Grants ($17,000) and a VSA Arts/MetLife Art Grant ($15,000). Visitors described the exhibit as colorful and joyfully exuberant, celebrating the unique educational benefits of the arts. The Young Middle School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Erik Herndon, performed during the reception while 500 parents, students and visitors filled the Art Fair to standingroom only capacity. One parent said that her son told friends and family that it was the best day of my life! Despite the difficult economy and one major sponsor going out of business, over $1,000 was awarded to recognize outstanding accomplishment.

OUR THEME FOR 2009: THINK WITH YOUR SENSES, FEEL WITH YOUR MIND
Our theme invited visitors to critically interact with student artwork, challenging them to use all of their senses to think and feel. Visitors made their own art and encountered living statues, performance art, animated movies, and watched Carver School of the Arts students make an art installation. Research shows that quality arts education leads to higher test scores and creates new economic, intellectual and social value.

ART EDUCATION FAIR ACHIEVING TARGETS: MIDDLE SCHOOL SUCCESSES

The over-all quality of the student artwork submitted to the Art Fair improved this year, especially in the targeted Middle School division, which saw a 50% increase in participating schools. Although there was a greater variety of media represented, including our first performance art/living sculpture entries (from Fickett ES) continued emphasis needs to be placed on contemporary artistic practices, 3-D, Installation, and Digital Media. 2010 Targets: Continued improvement of Art Fair Projects and submissions; continued increase in submissions from the High and Middle School Divisions; 100% participation by all APS schools.

2009 ART SCHOOLS OF THE YEAR

ickett Elementary School, C. W. Long Middle School, and South Atlanta School of Computer Animation and Design (SACAD) took home the top honors at the Art Education Fair. Each received a banner for being chosen as the 2009 Art School of the Year for their divisions. These schools were selected for this honor

based on the over-all quality of their submissions. Fickett ES: Andy Kerr, Art Teacher/Mr. Anthony Dorsey, Principal; C.W. Long MS: Martin Mensah, Art Teacher/Dr. Elizabeth Harris, Principal; SACAD: Courtney Bryant and Tokie Rome, Art Teachers/Mr. Scott Painter, Principal.
