This document discusses the two methods a mobile node uses to discover agents when arriving on a new network - agent advertisement and agent solicitation. Agent advertisement involves agents broadcasting their services through an ICMP message with type 9, containing the agent's IP address. Agent solicitation allows a mobile node to actively seek out agents by broadcasting an ICMP type 10 message without waiting for an advertisement.

Agent Discovery

-A mobile IP node arriving to a new network must learn the identify of the corresponding foreign or home agent. -It uses a process is known as agent discovery -Two ways: Agent advertisement and agent solicitation

Agent advertisement
-Agent advertises its services using an extension to the existing router discovery protocol. -Broadcasts an ICMP message with a type filed of 9. - The router discovery message contains the IP address of the router and additional information needed by mobile node.

Agent Solicitation
- Mobile node wanting to learn about agents without waiting to receive an agent advertisement. - It broadcasts an agent solicitation message, which is simply an ICMP message with type value 10.
