Introduction To Wireless Communications: 2012-2013:1 Semester

This document provides an introduction to the history and concepts of wireless communications. It discusses how [1] Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell helped develop the theory of electromagnetism, [2] Heinrich Hertz demonstrated radio waves experimentally, and [3] Guglielmo Marconi conducted early experiments in radio transmission. It also outlines some common wireless technologies and their wavelengths, and lists the main advantages of wireless communication as mobility and easier maintenance, while the disadvantages include security issues, high infrastructure costs, and susceptibility to physical and environmental interference.

Introduction to Wireless Communications

2012-2013:1st Semester

Wireless Communications

Michael Faraday (1791-1867)

Untrained scientist and not a mathematician

Faraday proposed that magnetism could give rise to electricity, just as electricity produces magnetism

James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879)

Responsible for translating Michael Faradays idea on electric and magnetic phenomenon into mathematical notation Related LIGHT phenomena and electromagnetic waves (speed and other properties)

Heinrich Hertz(1857-1894)
First demonstrated the reality of EM waves via his experiments in the production and reception of radio waves A pure physicist and aimed to prove existence of EM waves as he was tasked to do.

Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937)

First to experiment with radio transmission Related LIGHT phenomena and electromagnetic waves (speed and other properties)

Types of wireless communication

celullar

wireless computer network

radio service

Wavelength of Some Technologies

GSM Phones:
frequency ~= 900 Mhz wavelength ~= 33cm

PCS Phones
frequency ~= 1.8 Ghz wavelength ~= 17.5 cm

Bluetooth:
frequency ~= 2.4Gz wavelength ~= 12.5cm

Advantages and disadvantages of wireless communication

advantages:
mobility a wireless communication network is a solution in areas where cables are impossible to install (e.g. hazardous areas, long distances etc.) easier to maintain

disadvantages:
has security vulnerabilities high costs for setting the infrastructure unlike wired comm., wireless comm. is influenced by physical obstructions, climatic conditions, interference from other wireless devices

Electromagnetic Waves
