The New Los Angeles Charter School is initiating a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) to promote an end to bullying and harassment and support gay and straight relations. Research shows that LGBT students frequently experience verbal and physical bullying. The purpose of the GSA at New LA is to educate the community and plan a campaign to build a safe and inclusive school environment, in response to incidents of bullying involving homophobic language. The GSA will include administrators, teachers, parents, and student representatives who will meet weekly to plan campaigns and build a supportive network at the school, discussing topics like building tolerance and preventing bullying in an age-appropriate way.

The New Los Angeles Charter School Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)
The New Los Angeles Charter School administration & staff are initiating a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) to promote an end to harassment and bullying of any kind and support gay straight relations.
What is a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)? Why are public schools developing GSAs? 32%of students aged 12-18 experience verbal or physical bullying;
90% of LGBT students report being verbally harassed; 50% of LGBT students physically harassed; Recent tragedies involving LGBT students and students perceived to be LGBT;
GSAs combat bullying and harassment and promote
understanding and respect in the school community.
Why do we need a GSA at New Los Angeles? What is its purpose?
Simply put: Every school needs a GSA; Incidents of bullying and discrimination at New LA that involve the use of homophobic slurs and namecalling; community and planning a school-wide campaign in order to build a safe school environment and increase inclusivity.
