Solving Linear Equations

This document discusses solving linear equations and systems of linear equations. It defines linear equations as polynomial equations of degree one, such as 2x + 5 = 9. It explains that solving linear equations involves calculating the value of the variable. It also discusses solving systems of linear equations using the substitution and elimination methods, providing an example of using elimination to solve the system 2x + 4y = 9, 4x + 4y = 6 for x and y.

Solving Linear Equations

Solving Linear Equations Hi friends, you all are aware of algebra; it is that branch of mathematics that expresses the relationship between different operators, numbers, constants and variables. As I explained you several times that equations play an important role in algebra. In algebra, we try to convert all the problems in the form of equation and then solve it. All the word problems are first converted in equations and then we solve that equation to get the final answer. What do you understand by equations? Equation is defined as those mathematical statements that assert the equality of statement. In algebra polynomial equations are of different form like linear equations, quadratic equations, cubic equations and so on. The polynomial equation varies on the basis of degree of variable. Linear equations are the polynomial equations of degree one like 2x + 5 = 9, 4y + 8 = 6, etc. solving linear equations is an easy task and in this we have to calculate the value of variable.

This is the simple equations in mathematics. We also have set of equation that deals with more than one equation and it is called as the system of equations. For solving system of equations we generally use two methods first is substitution method and second is elimination methods. In substitution method, we substitute the value of one variable and try to find value of other by taking its help. In second method i.e. of elimination we apply either addition or subtraction on the given set of equations and then remove the variable and calculate the value of other. Let's see an example of system of equations: 2x+ 4y = 9, 4x + 4y = 6, In this we are having two variables and two equations so we can easily calculate the value of x and y. Let's see how to solve them. For solving Systems of Equations we are using emanation method, in this first subtract the equations on doing so, we get: -2x = 3, -x = 3/2, x = -3/2. Now, substitute the value of x in equation 1, on doing so we get, 2(-3/2) + 4y = 9, -3 + 4y = 9, 4y = 9 + 3, 4y = 12, y = 12/4, y = 3. In this way, you can easily solve system of equations. To learn more about these and graphing equations, students can use online help and solve all their problems related to any math topics. So, students visit websites that offer you online help and say bye to all math problems. Example 1: solve 2x + 3 =15 Solution 1: Given equation is: 2x + 3 = 15 Step 2: Subtract 3 from both side 2x + 3 - 3 = 15 - 3

2 x =12 Step3: Isolate the variable by dividing 2 to both side 2x2 = 122 x=6 Solution is 6 Method 2: Graph method for linear equation in two variable. The graph of every linear equation in two variables is a straight line. Every point on the graph of a linear equation is a two variables is a solution of the linear equation. moreover, every solution of the linear equation is a point on the graph of the linear equation
