ChE 125 Sample Long Exam 4

Answer the following questions completely and concisely. Show all solutions and indicate all assumptions clearly. Box your final answers.
1. The given liquid-phase autocatalytic reaction is to be performed in a 1000-L mixed flow reactor: ( )

The feed going in the reactor is at 30C and flows at a rate of 20 L/s, where A enters at 100 mol/s and R at 1 mol/s. Calculate the corresponding amount of heat required to maintain the exiting fluid at a temperature of 20C. (30 points) (Hint: first compute the exit conversion of A) -1 -1 -1 -1 Other data you may need: Cp,A = 70 Jmol K ; Cp,B = 25 Jmol K

2.

Six hundred and fifty moles of a reactant A will be placed in a 250-L isothermal batch reactor, where the following reaction takes place: (
-1 -1

Specific heat capacities (Jmol K ): A 31; B 78; and C 103 a. Find the required temperature of the reaction to be maintained if after 2.5 hours, 90% of A has been converted into products. (15 points) -1 -2 -1 b. If the reactor has a heat transfer coefficient of 15 Js m K and a coolant at 10C is employed to constantly remove heat from the reactor, find the required heat transfer area of the reactor to maintain the reactor temperature at your answer in (a). (10 points)

3.

Two competing reactions are to be performed in an adiabatic plug flow reactor: ( ( ) )

The feed at 25C contains pure A at a concentration of 3.1M and flows at 20 mol/s. It is required to convert 75% of A into a mixture containing six moles R for every mole of S. Assume the volume is constant. Specific heat capacities (Jmol-1K-1): A 75; R 39; and S 43 a. Set-up the energy balance equation to obtain an equation relating T and x A. No need to simplify the equation. (25 points) b. Set-up the mole balance equation to obtain an equation relating x A at space-time. No need to simplify the equation. (20 points)

Bonus! Under what condition(s) can a reactive system be both adiabatic and isothermal? (5 points)
