Assignment 3

This document provides the instructions for Assignment 3 of an Introduction to Fluid Mechanics course. It lists 4 problems to solve involving fluid properties and concepts like pressure, density, and buoyancy. Students are instructed to show all work and use appropriate fluid property tables. They should write 'no answer' for any problems not completed and staple the finished assignment.

ENSC 283 INTRUDUCTION TO FLUID MECHANICS

Assignment 3 Due date: Feb 8

Turn in your homework problems in order, and always write down all the steps that led you to the answer. If you do not turn in a problem, write the number and letter, e.g. 2(b), and write no answer. When fluid properties are needed, use the table in textbook or other tables available to you. Please staple your homework.

Problem 1 A water trough of semicircular cross section of radius 0.7 m consists of two symmetric parts hinged to each other at the bottom, as shown. The two parts are held together by a cable and turnbuckle places every 3 m along the length of the trough. Calculate the tension in each cable when the trough is filled to the rim.

Problem 2 It is estimated that 90% of an icebergs volume is below the surface, while only 10% is visible above the surface. For seawater with a density of 1025 kg/m3, estimate the density of the iceberg.

Problem 3 A 7-cm-diameter solid aluminum ball (SG = 2.7) and a solid brass ball (SG = 8.5) balance nicely when submerged in a liquid, as shown in the figure. (a) If the fluid is water at 20C, what is the diameter of the brass ball? (b) If the brass ball has a diameter of 3.8 cm, what is the density of the fluid?

Problem 4 Milk with a density of 1020 kg/m3 is transported on a level road in a 7-m-long, 3-m-diameter cylindrical tanker. The tanker is completely filled with milk (no air space), and it accelerates at 2.5 m/s2. If the minimum pressure in the tanker is 100 kPa, determine the maximum pressure difference and the location of the maximum pressure.
