ELEC 552

Issued on Feb 26, 2010 (Friday) Due on March 9, 2010 (Tuesday) 1.

HW#1

Derive the efficiencies of the boost and buck-boost converters with parasitics when operating in CCM. Plot M vs D as D changes from 0 to 1, with Rs = Rd = R = 50m and R = 10. You are asked to design a buck-boost converter using ideal switch and diode with the following specifications: Vg = 30V, Vo = -20V, R = 4, and fs = 40kHz Find the duty ratio D and the average inductor current I.

2.

2a.

2b. Calculate the value of L that will make the peak-to-peak inductor current ripple i equal to 10% of the average inductor current I. 2c. 3. Choose C such that the peak-to-peak output voltage ripple Vo is 0.1V. Consider two buck converters with ideal components (i.e., ideal switch, diode, inductor and capacitor). Given that both converters operate with the same parameters as follows: Vg = 3.6V, Vo = 2.0V, C = 10F, fs = 1MHz Calculate the inductor value such that the first converter will always operate in CCM, and the load current Io ranges from 100mA to 500mA, with BCM at Io = 100mA.

3a.

3b. Repeat the above calculation for the second converter which always operate in DCM, and the load current Io ranges from 100mA to 500mA, with BCM at Io = 500mA. 3c. For the converter in 3a, calculate the peak inductor current if the nominal load current is 250mA. Calculate also the output voltage ripple at Io = 250mA.

3d. For the converter in 3b, calculate the peak inductor current if the nominal load current is 250mA. Calculate also the output voltage ripple at Io = 250mA. Note that the duty ratio D may be different from that in 3c.
