What is JAD? JAD is the abbreviation of Joint Application Design or Joint Application Development. It is a kind of workshop jointly attended by developer, users and stakeholders for requirements elicitation and enhancement. JAD is a useful tool for getting quality information consensually in a shorter time frame compared to conventional interview, questionnaires, observation and other methods. Why should we do JAD? In history, software system developed without user involvement proved to be doomed and abandoned earlier than expected. Developers have the expertise on developing the system. However the developers do not have sufficient domain knowledge. On the other hand, domain experts know intricacies of the domain and the requirement very well but do not have sufficient knowledge and skill to develop a system. By using JAD, users get the system that maximally meets their requirements. Who should attend JAD and why? Representatives from all class of stakeholders should attend the JAD. They must be empowered to make decision (regardless of the responsibility and authority in the organization), committed to concept, prepared and from various part of the technical expertise and level. Those attendees should understand their role and have done all the required reading. Moreover, owner/sponsor, facilitator and scribe must attend the JAD. How many should attend a JAD? It is usually recommended from 6 to 12 people. This can be varied case by case. What output should we expect? Functionalities, priority, acceptable norms and prototypes
When should JAD be held and why? Usually before the start of the project (in the phase of business study) Where should JAD be held and why? It is advisable to hold the workshop in a separate place to be away from disturbance and normal routine work. How many days it should take and why? It depends on the scope of the objective set for the JAD How many times JAD should be held? As long as a JAD serves its objective, it can be carried out many times.
