Homework #5

1. Find Laurent series expansions for two functions at specified points. 2. Analyze singularities of two functions by changing variables and finding Laurent series expansions. Show one is a pole and the other is an essential singularity. 3. Determine and classify singularities of four functions by examining their behaviors at singular points. 4. Analyze behaviors of three functions "at infinity" by substituting z = 1/w and examining behaviors as w approaches 0. 5. Analyze a square root function: (a) find its branch points and (b) specify a branch cut that makes it single-valued.

Homework #5

Due Tuesday 10/24/2006

1. Find Laurent series for the following functions in the regions indicated:
z
(a) f (z) = for 0 < |z − 1| < 2,
(z − 1)(z − 3)
16
(b) f (z) = 2 for (i) 0 < |z| < 4 and (ii) |z| > 4.
z (z − 4)

2. (a) The function

e2z
f (z) =
(z + 1)3
has a singularity at z = −1. By putting w = z + 1, find the Laurent series of this
function, expanded about z = −1. Hence show that z = −1 is a pole.

(b) Do the same for the singularity of the function

1
f (z) = (z − 3) sin
z−2
at z = 2 and show that z = 2 is an essential singularity.

3. Determine and classify the singularities of each of the following functions:

z3 + 1 cos z 1 z
(a) , (b) , (c) , (d) .
z 2 (z + 1) z2 + 1 ez −1 cos z

4. We are often interested in the behavior of a function “at infinity”. By the behavior of
f (z) at infinity we mean the behavior of g(z) = f (1/z) at z = 0. Show that

(a) f (z) = z 2 has a pole at infinity,

(b) f (z) = e2z has an essential singularity at infinity,
(c) f (z) = 1/(z 2 − 1) has a removable singularity at infinity.

5. Let √
w(z) = z 2 − 1.

(a) Show that the function has branch points at z = 1 and z = −1.
(b) Show that the function is single-valued if one takes |Re z| ≥ 1 and Im z = 0 as
branch cuts.
