Patterns of Essay Organization

There are four main patterns of essay organization: chronological order, logical division, cause and effect, and comparison and contrast. Chronological order develops an essay based on time sequence. Logical division groups related items and discusses each group. Cause and effect examines reasons and results. Comparison and contrast analyzes similarities and differences between two or more items, either by discussing all similarities first and all differences second (block) or comparing features point-by-point.
