Group 23 Advantages and Disadvantages of Interchanges and Flyovers

The document defines interchanges and flyovers as road junctions that allow traffic to pass through without crossing other traffic streams. It lists types of interchanges like cloverleaf and turbine. Advantages of interchanges are free flowing traffic with fewer interruptions and improved safety, while disadvantages are higher costs and need for longer traffic light phases. Flyovers only require minimum space but are costly to construct, while private flyovers may charge tolls.

ADVANTAGES OF INTERCHANGES

Traffic move freely with fewer interruption. Speed limits are typically higher. There is improved operation efficiency and safety as well as reduced right-ofway. Interchanges such as the single point

urban interchange can allow for wider turns.

DISADVANTAGES OF INTERCHANGES

Generally due to longer and wider bridges, interchanges are costly. Due to large intersection area, the traffic lights need a longer yellow and red phase to clear the intersection. Interchanges such as the SPUI generally have a very large area of uncontrolled pavement in the middle of intersection.
