Image Processing

I - Introduction Definitions Image processing software is a tool that allows a user to: create, modify (changing image characteristics), import, save, print an image. An image is a visual information. A digital image is an image coded with numbers (called binary code: 0 and 1) so that it can be used in a computer. Paint, Adobe photoshop, the gimp, Photofiltre, Photofiltre Studio, Inkscape Mainly, we have 2 types of images: Raster Image: Composed of pixels. Produced using digital imaging devices such as a digital camera and a scanner or a raster image editing software such as Photofiltre. Vector Image: Composed of points, shapes, lines or curves which are defined by a mathematical formula. Raster versus Vector Image Vector images Vector Graphics are composed of mathematically-defined geometric shapes; lines, curves, objects and fills. Pixel Most digital images are a grid of pixels, a checkerboard of colored squares, where each square is a single color Each pixel is described by a number A Raster image is mainly characterized by its: Resolution Type Color depth size Resolution File Types Remark Compression reduces the file size of a picture. A compressed file format may be:

Lossy (like JPEG) Lossless (GIF, some TIFs) Color Depth File Size Resolution
the resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image. The resolution is the total number of pixels or the number of pixels per inch(ppi). Higher the resolution, better the quality is. The resolution of an image is measured Number of pixels per inch (1 inch= 2,54 cm). Pixels in columns X pixels in Rows

Color Depth
Number of bits necessary to store each pixel. File Size File Size= nb of pixels X color depth compression rate

File Type
Raster GIF, PNG JPEG PICT TIFF, BMP Vector . (Shockwave Flash) (Scalable Vector Graphic) .. (Encapsulated Postscript) .. (Adobe Illustrator)

III Importing a digital image Conclusion: Importing an image requires hardware resources (scanner, digital camera,..) and software resources (image processing or retouching software). A digital image is an image acquired, created, processed or stored.

- Acquired by devices such as scanner cameras or digital camcorders. - Created and processed by a software that facilitates the change of size, and colour,
and adding or deletion

- Stored on a storage medium (examples: CD , HDD, DVD )
