Lesson 1: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines (8.1)

Objective
Students will use slope in order to determine if lines are parallel or perpendicular.

INTRODUCTORY & DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES:


1. Vocabulary Minute: Have students write these words and their definitions in their Algebra vocabulary notebooks: parallel lines perpendicular lines negative reciprocals

2. Graph the following lines on your graphing calculator on the same coordinate plane. a. y = 2x + 5 b. y = 2x + 1 c. y = 2x - 1 What do you notice about the lines. (How are the lines similar, and what are their similarities? 3. Have students predict the location of the graph of y = 2x - 6. Ask students to list properties of parallel lines.

4. Copy the slopes of parallel lines property into their notes. Non-vertical lines are parallel if they have the same slope and different y-intercepts. Any two different vertical lines are parallel.

5. Graph the following line on a graphing calculator: y= - x +3. What appears to be the relationship of this line to the other four lines? Can students predict the location of the graph of y= - x - 7? 6. Use their graphing calculator to check their prediction. List the properties of perpendicular lines. 7. Discuss with students the concept of negative reciprocal. 8. Ask students What is the relationship between lines if the slopes are not equal and they do not have a negative reciprocal?

GUIDED PRACTICE
Example 1: Tell whether the other pair (3,4) is a solution of the given system x+ y= 7 2x y = 10

Example 2: Graph the system and determine the area of the triangle formed. Y=x Y=-3 Y+ x =3
