Needle Stick Protocol

A healthcare worker experienced a needlestick or sharps injury. They should wash the wound, complete an incident report, and visit the staff health clinic located in the hospital. The clinic will perform blood tests on the worker and may also test the patient, but only with consent. NEEDLESTICK/SHARPS INJURY AND POST-EXPOSURE PROTOCOL

1- Wash with soap and water and place a dressing to protect the wound. 2- Obtain OVR and INCIDENT REPORT from the Health & Safety Officer in your Clinical Area and complete both forms.

3- Take OVR form to the Staff Health Clinic in the KAUH ground floor. 4- The Staff Health Clinic will carry out the blood tests and will report the results to you when finished.

5- If your patient has a Medical Record in KAUH, he/she may be asked to have a blood test (based on their consent). If the patient does NOT have a Medical Record, the patient may have a temporary record opened in KAUH-ER. This must happen on the SAME day of the injury. Blood test can only be carried out with patient full consent.
