Religion census LDS Church making inroads; Utah boasts the largest percentage of believers

The LDS Church has long had a predominant presence in Utah and a substantial showing in much of the West. But now the faith is increasingly sprouting on unfamiliar turf in the South, Midwest and Appalachia. After merging people of all faiths into a single gure, Utah ends up with the most believers in the country. At least three-quarters of the population in most of Utah's 29 counties are religious adherents.
