Exercise 04 Limits (Solutions)

This document provides solutions to 10 limit problems: 1) The limit as x approaches 2 of 3 + 2x is 7. 2) The limit as y approaches 4 of 8/y is 2. 3) The limit as x approaches a of the square root expression is 3. 4) The limit as x approaches 8 of the expression is 54. 5) The limit as x approaches 0 of 1/x is undefined. It then continues solving limits of trigonometric, polynomial, and exponential functions, explaining the reasoning and using concepts like horizontal asymptotes and the squeeze theorem.

lim arctan x =? lim arctan x = 2

The graph of the inverse tangent function has two horizontal asymptotes at y = /2, /2 As you move along the x axis in the positive innity direction the graph approaches the positive asymptote.

7.

lim cos(x) =?

The graph of the cosine function oscillates between -1 and 1 as x approaches innity. Because it never approaches one single value, the limit is undened.

The term of highest degree has the most aect on the value of the function in extreme cases (x goes to innity), so the other 2 in the denominator and numerator respectively can be overlooked.

The squeeze thereom will be used to solve this problem. We can nd the limit to a function if we know that it is between two functions of the same limit around the value we are approaching. Note: The below statement is not always true, however as x approaches 0 we can witness it is by looking at the graphs of the functions.

sin x < x < tan x x tan x sin(x) < < sin x sin x sin x sin x 1 x < = 1< sin x cosxsinx cos x 1 lim x0 cos x x 1< sin x x lim x0 sin x sin x lim x0 x 10.) lim xex =

lim

The denominator function grows much faster than x, therefore the denominator will quickly become larger than the numerator, the whole term approaching 0.
