Communication System

The document discusses key concepts in communication systems including Fourier transforms, power spectral density, autocorrelation functions, orthogonal signals, linear systems, and bandwidth. It explains how these concepts are used to analyze signal spectra and the effects of noise on signals. The sampling theorem is also introduced as a way to orthogonalize signals using Fourier transforms.

OBJECTIVES
Explain Fourier Transform and spectra of a signal Explain the significance of power spectral density and auto correlation function Illustrate and explain the orthogonal signals and the effect of the noise Explain the sampling theorem using orthogonalization of signals Define linear systems Define bandwidth of a signal and describe the effect of the noise

Fourier Transform

Used to obtain the the spectrum of the signal

Signal spectra
It describe the frequency content of the signal It is a condition that is not limited to a specific set of values but can vary infinitely within a continuum

Power spectral density function (PSD)

refers to the amount of power per unit (density) of frequency (spectral) as a function of the frequency describes how the power (or variance) of a time series is distributed with frequency

auto correlation function

is the cross-correlation of a signal with itself A mathematical representation of the degree of similarity between a given time series and a lagged version of itself over successive time intervals

Orthogonal Signals

two functions and are called orthogonal if their inner product is zero for f g

Linear System
A system in which the outputs are components of a vector which is equal to the value of a linear operator applied to a vector whose components are the inputs Linear systems are frequently used to model physical channels in communication problems In such systems, the goal is to recover the information bearing input signal to the linear transformation based on noisy observations of the output

Bandwidth
the width of the range (or band) of frequencies that an electronic signal uses on a given transmission medium
