DC Final Term Assignment 2

The document contains 4 questions regarding inductor circuits. Question 1 involves finding the current and voltage expressions for an inductor after a switch changes positions. Question 2 finds the current and voltage expressions for an inductor after a switch is closed. Question 3 determines time constants and current/voltage expressions and values over time for a circuit with an inductor and resistor. Question 4 similarly analyzes current and voltage expressions and waveforms for an inductor circuit before and after a switch is opened.

Inductors Assignment

Last Date of Submission: 25th April, 2012

1. The switch in the circuit shown in the following figure has been in position a for a long time. At t = 0, the switch moves from position a to position b. The switch is a makebefore-break type; that is, the connection at position b is established before the connection at position a is broken, so there is no interruption of current through the inductor. a) Find the expression for i(t) for t 0. b) What is the initial voltage across the inductor just after the switch has been moved to position b? c) How many milliseconds after the switch has been moved does the inductor voltage equal 24 V? f) Plot both i(t) and v(t) versus t.

2. The switch in the circuit shown in the following Fig. has been open for a long time. At t = 0 the switch is closed. Find the expression for a) v(t) when t 0 and b) i(i) when t 0.

Write the mathematical expressions for vL and vR after the switch is closed at t = 0 s. d. Determine iL and vL at t = 1, 3 , and 5 . e. Sketch the waveforms of iL, vL, and vR for the storage phase.

4. For the network of the following Fig.: a. Write the mathematical expression for the current iL and the voltage vL following the closing of the switch. b. Determine the mathematical expressions for iL and vL if the switch is opened after a period of five time constants has passed. c. Sketch the waveforms of iL and vL for the time periods defined by parts (a) and (b).
