Running Head: Exercise 1C

The document discusses four different graphs - A, B, C, and D - and the appropriate chart type to visualize the data presented in each. Graph A uses a pie chart to show the breakdown of Illinois's population by race. Graph B uses a bar chart to compare home ownership rates from 1980 to 1990. Graph C is a pie chart showing the percentage of individuals on food stamps in Illinois by race. Graph D is a line graph comparing Black and White infant mortality rates over a long period of time.

Ex. 1c 2

Graph A: Pie Chart

The data given in the graph above is befitting of a Pie Chart because it breaks down the State of Illinoiss entire population by race. Therefore the separate percentages of races are all a part of an entire states population.

Ex. 1c 3

Graph B: Bar Chart

The data in the bar chart shows the occupancy rates of individuals that owned homes from 1980 to 1990. Since the graph shows the rates over a short period of time while comparing different years it was appropriate to use a bar graph.

Ex. 1c 4

Graph C: Pie Chart

The chart above is the total percentage of individuals on food stamps in Illinois by race. A pie chart was best for the data above because it is expressing the different percentages of a states entire food stamp recipient population. Each races percentage is a part of a whole which is best expressed in pie charts.

Ex. 1c 5

Graph D: Line Graph

The graph above shows the comparison between Black and White infant mortality rates. A line graph was best for the above data because it shows the infant mortality rates over a long period of time.
