Professional Self-Assessment Form

Teacher Candidates Name: Aubriaunna Bodrick Mentor Teachers Name: Ms. Tammy Jeffords Grade Level (s)/Subject Area(s): 4 and 5 Grade Science ___________________________________________________________________________________ Instructions to the teacher candidate: Please reflect on your professional performance, and respond to each of the following prompts. 1. In terms of the ADEPT Performance Standards, what are your professional strengths? How have you built on these strengths so far, and how do you plan to do so in the future? In terms of ADEPT Performance Standards, I find my professional strengths to lie within APS Standards 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 10. Thus far, I have practiced developing satisfactory unit plans that facilitate student achievement of appropriate academic standards, include content, strategies, and resources, and uses student performance data to drive instruction. I have already put into practice the administering of several forms of assessments at appropriate intervals of time throughout my unit lessons. After administering these assessments, I am able to use the data in which I collect to make instructional decisions. Every day, I am constantly making students aware of my high expectations- what I expect from them before, during and after the lesson. Very creative with my lessons, I am always finding ways to incorporate a variety of instructional strategies. Students should never be presented content the same way every day; they should never know what to expect when they come in the room. I like to spice things up in order to make their learning experiences enjoyable. During my lessons, I am constantly monitoring students progress through the usage of several different check for understanding techniques. This variety of techniques (no matter how diverse they may be) allows me to make appropriate decisions regarding instruction. When students complete instructional tasks, appropriate instructional feedback is always rendered (whether orally or written). To make sure that I can achieve my professional goals as an educator, I am always excited about opportunities for growth through professional development sessions. I plan to build on these strengths in the future through continuous practice and support from my cooperating teacher. 2. In terms of the ADEPT Performance Standards, what are your professional challenges? How do you plan to meet these challenges? In terms of ADEPT Performance Standards, I find my professional challenges to lie within APS Standards 6 and 9. From what I have seen thus far since I have been student-teaching, I have a th lack of confidence in teaching some of the 5 grade content. When the time comes to teach this content that worries me, I am afraid that it may be a bit challenging for me to demonstrate a thorough command of the discipline. I am also afraid that when students ask questions, I may not be able to answer at the best of my ability! On the other hand, I do not have any problems structuring content for meaningful learning. Managing student behavior gets challenging for me at times because students are accustomed to rules that my cooperating teacher already has in place- some rules in which I do not necessarily agree with. However, I am very good at using preventive discipline techniques that let students know I mean business. I plan to meet these

challenges through the guidance and support of my cooperating-teacher. Asking questions to gain a better understanding and/or clarification of content that isnt so familiar to me will help. Questions are always good. Also turning to professional development opportunities (such as science conferences) that provide information on the content could be beneficial. Finding new and better ways to both positively and negatively reinforce students that are more reminiscent of my personal teaching style will be a great way to meet this challenge. 3. Describe your students overall progress and achievement. What insights have you gained into ways to improve student progress and achievement? As evident in the last Benchmark scores for 4 and 5 grade science, it is clear my students are th th indeed striving for excellence. Compared to other schools, 4 and 5 graders at BethuneBowman Elementary School placed in the top three out of eight schools. In class, their overall progress and achievement is average. As I sit and think about ways to improve student progress and achievement in Ms. Jeffords class, several things come to mind. For starters, I believe that setting high expectations for all students is a must. In addition to setting these high expectations, students should be well aware of them. Increasing rigor and complexity of assignments goes hand-in-hand with high expectations and it will possibly help with an increase in test scores. Other insights gained include: Varying instructional strategies Promoting critical thinking Finding ways to positively reinforce students for on-task behavior and exceptional work Continue to show students their data from previously taken assessments as a means of motivation. 4. How will you use the knowledge you have gained through this professional selfassessment to promote your continuous professional growth and collaboration? Using the knowledge I have gained through this professional self-assessment, I will strive to continue strengthening my strengths through continual practice of strategies that are effective. Strategies that are not effective will be terminated or transformed into better, more practical strategies that will indeed improve student progress and achievement. In terms of the challenges, I believe that if I stick to the ideas I have about meeting them (challenges), I will definitely be able to grow professionally.
