Pom5 - II

This document discusses work study and method study in production and operations management. It describes work study as systematically examining work methods to improve efficiency, quality, and safety. Method study is defined as systematically recording and analyzing work processes to identify improvements. The main steps of method study are to select work to study, record relevant information, examine the records, develop improved methods, implement new standards, and maintain them. The objectives of method study are to enhance work processes, layout, materials handling, reduce hazards and fatigue, and apply ergonomics principles. Various charts used in method study are described such as process charts, man-machine charts, and simultaneous motion charts.

Productions and Operations Management

Work Study
Work Study is the systematic examination of the methods of carrying out activities such as to improve the effective use of resources and to set up standards of performance for the activities carried out. This has to do with Productivity Improvement, but also improvement of Quality and Safety.

Work Study

Method Study
Method Study is the systematic recording and critical examination of ways of doing things in order to make improvements.
The process is often seen as a linear, described by its main steps of:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Select (the work to be studied); Record (all relevant information about that work); Examine (the recorded information); Develop (an improved way of doing things); Install (the new method as standard practice); Maintain (the new standard proactive).

Objectives Of method study:

Improved working process. Sound plant layout. Efficient and faster materials handling. Reduced health hazards and fatigue. It applies ergonomics.

Method Study - Chart

1. Process Charts: Outline process charts, and flow process charts are graphic representations of the sequence of all operations, transportation, inspection, delays and storage occurring during the process 2. Man-machine chartIt is multiple activity chart and illustrates the operation and delays of the operator and the machine which he operates. 3. Two handed process chart. In this chart the activities of the workers or operators both hands or limbs are recorded chronographically.

Method Study - Chart

4. Multiple activity chart. The activities of more than one subject are

recorded on a common time scale to show their relationship.

5. Simultaneous Motion chart(SIMO chart) The simultaneous motion chart is a type of two handed process chart in which the micro

motions of both hands are recorded

6. Film analysis chart
