Design of Modular Multi-Level Converter

The document summarizes the design of a modular multi-level converter (MMC). The MMC is a new type of voltage source converter that uses submodules consisting of IGBTs and capacitors to generate stepped voltage waveforms for medium and high-voltage DC power transmission. Each submodule can be in one of two states, either matching the capacitor voltage or zero. The required DC voltage source is determined by the number of submodules. The MMC provides advantages over conventional converters like lower harmonic distortion and improved reliability.

Design of Modular Multi-level converter

What is MMC?
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is new type of voltage source converter (VSC) for medium or high-voltage dc power Transmission. It has many advantages compared to the conventional type converter

1)Sub modules(SM):IGBTs,Capacitors 2)DC source 3)Inductors

Sub-Module
1)Sub module: In MMC, each SM is a two-terminal device which consists of a half IGBT bridge and a capacitor, Depending on its gating signals, the SM terminal voltage is either equal to its capacitor voltage or zero

Each submodule toggles between two states. In the upper arm submodules, on state (Si=1) represents that the lower semiconductor is conducting but not the upper one,

DC source
The DC source is selected according to the number of sub-modules of one branch. This turns out from the following equation. where, V1-n: voltage across the capacitor of each sub-module VDC: total DC voltage.
