Difference Between Euclidean and Non Euclidean Geometry

Euclidean geometry is based on Euclid's work in 300 BC and describes geometry in flat, two-dimensional planes. Non-Euclidean geometries include spherical and hyperbolic geometries. Spherical geometry describes geometry on the surface of a sphere, where straight lines are arcs and interior angles of triangles sum to more than 180 degrees. Hyperbolic geometry involves inwardly curved spaces where interior angles of triangles sum to less than 180 degrees. The key difference between these geometries is their treatment of parallel lines, which do not exist in spherical geometry and can intersect in hyperbolic geometry.

Difference Between Euclidean and Non Euclidean Geometry

by Johns on May 2, 2011, http://www.differencebetweenvs.com/difference-between-euclidean-and-non-euclideangeometry/ Euclidean geometry named ftr t founder th Greek mathematician Euclid n 300BC. It a collection f proofs bt squares circles n triangles n thr geometric shapes, n still used n teaching high school geometry today.

Non Euclidean geometry refers t n geometry whh nt Euclidean. Thr r essentially two types f Euclidean geometry, spherical, n hyperbolic geometry, whh describe points, lines n planes. Th ffrn between Euclidean, n th two non Euclidean geometries, lies n th nature f parallel lines. Euclidean states tht thr n b n one line through a point whh n th same plane th line, n t nnt b intersected. In spherical geometry thr r n such lines, n n hyperbolic geometry thr n b two distinct lines whh n pass through a point n b parallel t tht line.

Euclidean geometry geometry n a plane (k th surface f a piece f paper), n deals wth points n lines. Spherical geometry plane geometry n th surface f a sphere. S a straight line n th surface f a sphere w become n arc, n th longest line w equate t th diameter f th sphere. Th type f geometry used fr global navigation. Fr instance th shortest distance between Florida (USA), n th Philippine Islands nt w imagine t f west n south, bt t travel north t Alaska. B Florida, Alaska, n th Philippines lie n th same rt circle. Th rt circle w equate t th line f shortest distance n Euclidean geometry. In Euclidian geometry, th interior angles f a triangle add up t 180, bt n spherical geometry add up t br angles depending n th size f th sphere.

Hyperbolic geometry associated wth curved space. Fr space whh curved inwards, th angles f a Euclidian planar triangle w add up t something less thn 180, again dependent upon th degree f inward curvature.
