Magic Subnetting Chart

This document outlines a magic subnetting chart that shows the number of total subnets, addresses per subnet, subnet mask, and CIDR notation when subnetting in the 4th, 3rd, or 2nd octet. It specifies that the total number of subnets does not change based on which octet is subnetted, but the addresses per subnet does, growing by powers of 256 depending on whether the 3rd or 2nd octet is used for subnetting rather than the 4th octet.

The number of Total Subnets does not change when subnetting in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th octet. The total addresses per subnet is based on subnetting the 4th octet. *If subnetting in the 3rd octet multiply the Total addresses per Subnet 4th Octet by 256. *If subnetting in the 2nd octet multiply the Total addresses per Subnet 4th Octet by 65536 (256 x 256). *This calculation will account for all addresses in a given octet that is completely dedicated to host addressing.
