Systems of Equations Project #2

This document outlines the requirements for a systems of equations project. Students must create a word problem involving two equations that intersect at a single solution point. They then graph and algebraically solve the system of equations. Finally, students must explain what their solution means in the context of the original word problem. The project requirements include creating a title page with their name, the problem, and a related image. Students will be graded on their title page, math work, problem setup, and understanding of the solution.

System of Equations Project (outline) Due Date: Friday March 2, 2012
1. Create a word problem that deals with two equations that will eventually intersect each other.
In other words create your own system of equations that has one solution. Be creative and
make your problem about something that you are interested in (ex. sports, cooking, makeup,
penguins, etc.). Check with me to see if your equations will work.
2. State the two equations from your problem using x and y as your variables.
3. Show how to solve your system of equations by using graphing (label x and y axis and give the
units for the lines on the graph).
4. Show how to solve your system of equations by using substitution.
5. Explain in words what your solution means in light of your problem.
6. Create a separate Title page which includes:
Title of your project (Title must include the words "system of equations")
Your name and period
A colored picture that deals with your problem
