Library Journal (August 1, 2007) Editor Bahmueller (Ctr. for Civic Education, CA) presents this attractive hardcover as "the most comprehensive and up-to-date one-volume reference work available on U.S. states." All components have been updated or replaced; the chapter on the District of Columbia is entirely new. The 51 entries average 20 pages apiece and are arranged alphabetically by state name. Forty statistical tables, including growth projections for every state through the year 2030, appear in each, as does a helpful "Index to Tables." For each state, a full county listing offers information on population, rank, and square mileage. Towns and cities with at least 10,000 residents are also listed with their respective population and rank data. Historical time lines complement the relevant and highly readable text, providing context. Also included are 154 maps, 225 black-and-white photographs, and 36 appendixes (25 of them new). In addition to suggested print and Internet resources found in every entry, there are a comprehensive bibliography and a guide to e-resources at the back of the text. All the basics are here (e.g., history, geography, economy), but the unexpected also abounds: e.g., governor profiles, political party affiliations of federal and state legislators, and voter participation. Insignias and other graphics are large and clear throughout, and the thick, nongloss pages make everything easy on the eyes. The layout is organized and consistent. BOTTOM LINE This edition is an easy recommendation; students from upper middle school through college as well as public library patrons will be very well served by it. Numerous sidebars are used to highlight the issues. Highly readable and amply illustrated with photographs, paintings, and period illustrations, these books can be purchased individually. However, they are best purchased as a set so students can

These articles will interest the career minded, but adults may need to guide the discussion on the Holland Code, Kiersey Temperament Sorter, and MyersBriggs Type Indicator Assessment tests. Sixteen "Career Cluster Articles" follow, exploring "how individual careers fit into the larger picture of major industries." Next, individual occupations are clearly outlined, covering job requirements, education and training, outlook, online resources, and organizational addresses. Along with the familiar careers are such occupations as agribusiness technicians, histologic technicians, and aquaculturists. Entries reflect the current employment market; for example, under "Newspaper Editors" it's noted that Web-based publications will offer more opportunities. The easy-to-read and colorful fonts, the photos, and the comfortable layout will appeal to readers. In addition, icons link to the "U.S. Department of Education's 16 Career Clusters." These accessible volumes will be invaluable to students.
