• Back in Caveman days, there was only

one way to measure where you were.
• NUMBER LINE
• There’s Trog the caveman. He usually
hunted around number 6.
Then he would go home, which
was at “0”
Nobody ever left the trail. You just
didn’t do it!
• BUT…..One day, Trog gets crazy and
LEAVES the path!!

NOBODY ever did this before!!!!

It was TOTALLY CRAZY!!
• Now Trog is lost. He’s not on the number
line. How do we tell where Trog is?
• Easy!! With TWO number lines!

One will measure sideways…

The other will measure

up and down!!!
• Where is Trog from
his house?

Start Here…

6 sideways,
5 up !
•These two number lines
put together is called
The Coordinate Plane
The line that measures
sideways is called
the x-axis.

SIDEWAYS = X
The line that measures

Up and Down = Y
up and down is called
The y-axis.
Where the lines meet is called the Origin
When giving a position
on the coordinate plane,
you always say the
X-axis first….

(8, 6)
…then the Y-axis
Let’s Practice.
Give the coordinates:
(4,10)
(-2,2) (0,0)

a.
k.a
: T (4,-2)
HE
(-6,-4) OR
IG
IN
• Graphs with two number lines are used to
show how one thing affects another thing….

Let’s see how Hours of Daily Sunlight affects

how tall plants grow:

Hours 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16
Sunlight

Plant 0 1 1.5 3 7 9 12 16 20
Height
(inches)
Hours 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16
Sunlight

Plant 0 1 1.5 3 7 9 12 16 20
Height
(inches)

This is what WE change. Or

YOU change.ThisYou
is what
control this part!
CHANGES ON ITS OWN.
Called the
Called the DEPENDENT
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
VARIABLE
What you did here!!

Hours 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16
Sunlight

Plant 0 1 1.5 3 7 9 12 16 20
Height
(inches)

What happens here DEPENDS ON….

Hours 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16
Sunlight

Plant 0 1 1.5 3 7 9 12 16 20
Height
(inches)

All of the numbers from the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE

are known as the DOMAIN
All of the numbers of the DEPENDENT VARIABLE

are known as the RANGE

Hours 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16
Sunlight
Plant 0 1 1.5 3 7 9 12 16 20
Height

Numbers in the DOMAIN

Numbers in the RANGE
are graphed on the X-AXIS
Are graphed on the Y-AXIS

LET’S GRAPH IT !!!!!!
