Assignment 06 New Work

This document contains an assignment with 4 problems related to functions and graphs: 1) Determine if an equation defines a function and find its domain. 2) Use a graph to estimate x-intercepts, y-intercepts, and a value. 3) Analyze properties like domain, range, intercepts, and intervals of increase/decrease for a graph. 4) Perform algebraic operations on functions and state their domains.

MA240 College Algebra Assignment # 06 09 January 2011

Assignment 06
1. Determine whether the equation defines a function with independent variable x. If it does, find the domain. If it does not, find a value of x to which there corresponds more than one value of y. Problem: x|y|= x + 9 |y|= y= + 1 or y= Answer: The domain of the problem x|y|=x + 9 is all real numbers except 0. 2. Use the graph of the function y=x + 4 to estimate:
12 10 8 6 4 2 0 -8 -6 -4 -2 -2 -4 0 2 4 6 8

a. b. c.

= The answer is because -4 is the only xvalue that intersects with 0 as the y-value, so it is the only x-intercept.

= 6 is the answer. =0 is the answer.

3. Answer each question for the following graph:

f(x)
5 4 3 2 1 0 -2 -1 0 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6

-4

a. Find the domain of . The domain is all real numbers. (-, b. Find the range of . The range is all real numbers equal to or less than 4. (-, ] c. Find the x-intercepts. The x-intercepts are (3,0) and (-1,0). d. Find the y-intercepts. The y-intercept is (0,3). e. Find the intervals over which is increasing. It increase over (-,1] where -< x 1. f. Find the intervals over which is decreasing. It decreases over [1,) where 1 x < . g. Find the intervals over which is constant. There are no intervals over which it is constant. h. Find any points of discontinuity. There are no points of discontinuity. 4. Use the following to answer questions a-d:
