ASSMENT4

The document discusses electromagnetic waves reflecting off a conducting surface and forming a standing wave pattern. It provides expressions for the reflected electric field and the position of the first maximum in the standing wave pattern. The reflected electric field is out of phase with the incident electric field by a factor that depends on the reflection coefficient. Successive minima and maxima in the standing wave intensity are spaced λg/2 apart, with a minimum or maximum occurring at the conducting surface depending on the sign of the reflection coefficient.

Question: The Boundary condition at a conducting surface is that the tangential electric field component of an EM wave is zero at the

plane of the surface. Find an expression for the field component of the reflected wave and the position of the first maximum of the standing wave pattern. Answer: The equation of the incident electric field, is: (1)

Lets define a quantity I, which is the square of the total magnitude:

(3) (4) The minima and maxima of I are sufficient to determine the standing wave pattern, they satisfy:

Figure: Minima and Maxima.

Where The reflected electric field, in the case where the reflection takes place at the termination of the waveguide, is: (2) The coefficient of the reflected field satisfies, where the real number r is the reflection coefficient, which includes the change of sign if necessary. The term refers to a constant phase such that:

Where P is an integer. Two successive minima (respectively two successive maxima) are thus spaced out g/2. The distance between a minima and a maxima is g/4 (Figure: Minima and Maxima). As for the existence of a node or an antinode at the termination, we notice that: The electric field at the termination is maximum if and only if r > 0 and = 0. The electric field at the termination is minimum if and only if r < 0 and = 0. A resistive termination satisfies one of these cases, a reactive one does not give minima or maxima at the end. The standing wave ratio is given by:

The path difference between the reflected and the incident wave, is clearly (where P refers to the position of the probe), it thus introduces an additional phase shift , what the formulas of the fields, (1) and (2) satisfy.
