Chemistry Lab Report - Reaction of Alcohol

This chemistry lab report summarizes experiments performed on the reaction of alcohols. In the Lucas test, the alcohols were classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary based on their reactions. A pungent smell was produced in the esterification test, indicating the formation of an ester. The conclusions were that alcohols can be classified by the number of carbon atoms bonded to the hydroxyl group and that they undergo oxidation or dehydration reactions.

NAME : AIZATTUL ANIS BT. SOBRI (MS1113541609) FATIN ASHIFA BT. ROSLAN (MS1113541814) LECTURER : MDM. HASNAH BT. IDRIS

EXPERIMENT 6 : REACTION OF ALCOHOLS

RESULTS

: Lucas Test Alcohol X 2-methyl2-pentanol 2-butanol n-butanol 3 ROH 3 ROH 2 ROH 1 ROH Solution turns cloudy immediately Solution turns cloudy immeditely Solution turns cloudy immediately Colourless solution formed Na2Cr2O7/H+ Cannot be oxidise Orange colour solution maintained Green solution formed Turn to green solution

Esterification Test Observation : Pungent smell was produced

DISCUSSION

: Explain the formation of the two layers in the Lucas Test. Two layers was formed in Lucas Test because of the difference in intermolecular forces between reactant and 2-methyl-2-propanol. Write the equations for the reactions in Part (B) and Part (C). Part (B)

CH3 H20+HCL CH3CCH3 Zn OH PART (C) O CH3C-OH + HOCH2CH3

CH3 CH3CCH3 + H20 Cl

O CH3C-OCH2CH3

CONCLUSION

: 1) The alcohols are classified as primary (1), secondary (2) and tertiary (3) alcohols. 2) Alcohols undergo oxidation to give aldehydes , ketones, or carboxylic acids, or they can be dehydrated to alkenes. As one moves from primary to secondary to tertiary alcohols with the same backbone, the hydrogen bond strength, the boiling point, and the acidity typically decrease.
