Design Problem2

This document provides instructions for a design exercise involving operational amplifiers and transducers. Students will determine the input-output characteristics of a light-dependent resistor as it is subjected to different lighting conditions. Then students will use what they learned to design simple control circuits involving op-amps, resistors, and LEDs that meet various specifications based on the lighting conditions measured by the light-dependent resistor. A circuit schematic diagram must be provided.

Design Exercise 2 Op-Amps and Transducers

(To be implemented in class for two meetings, to be submitted next week) Objectives 1. Determine the input-output characteristics of a selected transducer. 2. Use the operational amplifier in the implementation of a simple transducer and control circuit. Materials (Available in class) - Single variable DC supply (set at 12 V) - dual DC power supply - Photocell (Light-dependent resistor) - 2 LED's (red, green) - 2 bulbs (one 12 Vdc bulb, one 5 Vdc bulb) - operational amplifiers (LM 741) - resistors Procedure: 1. Measure the resistance across the LDR as you subject it to the following light conditions. Avoid moving the LDR as you wait for its resistance to settle to some average value. Condition Description of Lighting Condition Resistance Bright Ambient Shadow Dark Connect the 12V-3W light bulb to a 12-V DC source and place it across the face of the LDR Subject the LDR to normal room lighting conditions (LDR surface facing the ceiling) Place your forefinger about half a centimeter above the face of the LDR (LDR facing the ceiling) Completely cover (and press on) the face of the LDR with your forefinger.

2. How does the resistance of the LDR change with changes in illumination? Why do you think the resistance of the LDR changes the way it does?

3. For each of the following specifications, design a simple control circuit (you'll have different circuits to be tested one at a time). You may only use Op-amps, resistors, a red and a green LED, a dual supply voltage of +/- 5 volts for the op-amps, and a 12V DC supply for the "bright light source to implement the control circuit. a. A bulb lights up at an illumination that is inversely proportional to the illumination that the LDR is subjected to. b. A green LED turns ON when the LDR is subjected to dark lighting conditions. c. A red LED turns ON when the LDR is subjected to a shadow to ambient lighting condition. d. Both green and red LED's are OFF when the LDR is subjected to a bright lighting condition.
