Accuracy and Precision

The document discusses key concepts in measurement including accuracy, precision, and statistical measures. It defines accuracy as how close a measurement is to the true value, and precision as how consistent repeated measurements are. Both good accuracy and precision are ideal. Common statistical measures mentioned include mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation. The document emphasizes the importance of measuring processes accurately and precisely to meet customer needs, and establishing statistical process control.

Accuracy
How close a measurement is to the actual or true value
true value good accuracy

poor accuracy

true value

Precision
How well several measurements agree with each other
Good precision

Poor precision

Accuracy and Precision

What can you say about the accuracy and precision in each of the following

Poor precision, poor accuracy

Poor precision, good accuracy

Good precision, poor accuracy

Good precision, good accuracy

Good precision, good accuracy

Good precision, poor accuracy

Poor precision, good accuracy

Poor precision, poor accuracy

Changes in absolute level ( centering / accuracy) Changes in variability (spread / precision)

Mean (arithmetic average) Median (simply the value of the middle item) Mode (the most commonly occurring value)

Range
It is the difference between the highest and the lowest observations and simplest possible measure of scatter. There are two major problems in its use: It tends to increase as the sample size increased . It remains the same despite changes in the values lying between the lowest and the highest values. It would seem desirable to obtain a measure of spread which is free from these two disadvantages.

Standard deviation ()
Takes all the data into account and is a measure of the deviation of the values from the mean.

What do you measure in your process? Are measures important to customer ?

Are measures accurate and precise ?

Why not ?!
