Class 9 Transformer On Load - PPT MADAM

When a transformer is under no-load conditions: 1. There is iron loss in the core from hysteresis and eddy currents but no copper loss in the secondary winding since it is open. 2. The primary current has two components - one that supplies iron loss and primary copper loss, and another that sustains the alternating flux in the core. 3. Under no-load, the primary current has to supply iron losses in the core and a small amount of copper loss in the primary winding.

Transformer on No-load

Actual transformer: Actual transformer when put on load has i) iron loss in the core i.e Hystersis loss & eddy current loss ii) copper loss in the windings (both primary & secondary). When on no-load, as Secondary is open, there is no cu-loss in secondary winding but iron loss in core & cu-loss in primary winding.

No load current

Ideal transformer with an open secondary winding Under no-load condition, primary input current Io has to supply 1. Iron loss in the core (Hysteresis & Eddy current loss) 2. Small amount of copper loss in primary

Under no-load, primary current Io has two components 1. Iw = Io cos o, called the active component as it mainly supplies the iron loss + Primary Copper loss.

2. I = Io sin o, called the magnetizing component as it sustains the alternating flux in the core.
