How To Simplify Rational Numbers

To simplify rational numbers like fractions, we use the same operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. For addition and subtraction, we find the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators and adjust the numerators accordingly. For multiplication, we multiply the numerators and denominators separately. For division, we invert the second number and multiply. Some examples provided are adding 5/6 + 2/3, subtracting (6/5) from (3/8), and multiplying 3/7 by (-5/4).

How To Simplify Rational Numbers

How to simplify Rational Numbers To solve rational numbers, we know that all arithmetical operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can take place in rational numbers. All operations used for simplification of rational numbers are similar to the methods of simplification of fraction numbers. Addition of rational Numbers: Let us add two rational numbers 5/6 + 2/3, We first find the LCM of denominators 6 and 3 =6. Now, to change the denominator of 2/3 to 6 , we multiply numerator & denominator by 2, so we get: =5/6 + (2*2)/ (3*2) =5/6 +4/6 = (5+4)/6 =9/6 Ans.

Now let us add another pair or rational numbers where one number is negative & another is positive. (-3/4) and (4/7) = (-3/4) + (4/7) L.C.M. of denominators 4 & 7 is 28. Now to make the denominator of both rational numbers 28, we multiply numerator and denominator of first number by 7 and second by 4. We get = (-3*7)/(4*7) + (4*4)/(7*4) = -21/28 + (16/28) = (-21+16)/28 =-5/28 Ans. Subtraction of Rational Numbers: When we have to subtract one rational number from another, we will follow the same pattern. Let us take an example: To Subtract (6/5) from (3/8), we write = (3/8) (6/5) L.C.M. of 8 & 5 are 40, so to make the denominator 40, we proceed as follows: = (3*5)/(8*5) (6*8)/(5*8), = (15/40) (48/40), = (15-48) /40, = (-33/40). Let us take another example :- Subtract (-4/5) from (-3/7), = (-3/7) (- 4/5), L.C.M. of 7 & 5 is 35, On making denominators of both rational numbers same we get: = (-3*5)/(7*5) (-4*7)/(5*7) = (-15/35) + (28/35) = (-15+28) /35 = 13/ 35. In another example we take both positive rational numbers.

Subtract (2/5) from (2/3), = 2/3 -2/5, L.C.M. of 3 & 5 =15, =(2*5) / (3*5) (2*3)/ (5*3), =10/15 6/15, =(10-6) /15, =4/15. Procedure for multiplication and division are different. Multiply 3/7 by (-5/4), We multiply numerator with numerator & Denominator with a denominator, We get: = ( 3*-5)/ (7*4), =(-15) / 28.
