EE 550 Linear Control Systems: Professor Samir AL-Baiyat Spring 2011

This document provides an overview of the EE 550 Linear Control Systems course taught by Professor Samir AL-Baiyat in Spring 2011. It discusses the course objectives, topics, schedule and policies. It defines a system as an object where different variables interact and produce observable signals. It notes that the output of dynamic systems depends on current and past input values. It outlines the analytical study of physical systems including modeling, analysis, design of control laws, observers and optimal control laws. It also classifies systems models into distributed parameter, lumped parameter, stochastic, deterministic, discrete time, continuous time, nonlinear and time varying/invariant systems.

System
- Definition

A system is an object in which variables of different kinds interact and produce observable signals. In a dynamic system the current output value depends not only on the current input value but also on its earlier values.

Analytical Study of Physical Systems

Modeling (apply physical laws) Analysis: Quantitative: How to derive response for a given input Qualitative: How to analyze controllability, observability, stability and robustness without knowing the exact solution?

Design: How to realize a system given its mathematical description How to design a control law so that desired output response is produced How to design an observer to estimate the state of the system How to design optimal control laws

The word "stochastic" means "pertaining to chance, and is thus used to describe subjects that contain some element of random or stochastic behavior. For a system to be stochastic, one or more parts of the system has randomness associated with it. Unlike a deterministic system, for example, a stochastic system does not always produce the same output for a given input. A few components of systems that can be stochastic in nature include stochastic inputs, random time-delays, noisy (modelled as random) disturbances, and even stochastic dynamic processes.
