Probability Sampling

Probability sampling involves randomly selecting population elements so that each has a known chance of selection, which can result in simple random sampling or more complex designs like stratified, cluster, and double sampling. Non-probability sampling does not assign selection probabilities and involves arbitrary or purposive selection by the researcher, common types being convenience, snowball, purposive, judgment, and quota sampling.

PROBABILITY SAMPLING

y y

Also known as random sampling or chance sampling It is based on random selection a controlled procedure that that ensures that each population element is given a known non-zero chance of selection Probability sampling under unrestricted sampling technique may result in Simple Random Sampling Probability sampling under restricted sampling technique may result in Complex Random Sampling Designs Some of the popular complex random sampling designs are as follows Systematic Stratified Cluster Double

NONNON-PROBABILITY SAMPLING
y

Also known by different names such as Deliberate, Purposive or Judgment, it is arbitrary & subjective It does not afford any basis for estimating the probability that each item in the population is included in the sample In this type of sampling, items for the sample are selected deliberately by researcher; his choice concerning the items remains supreme. Non -Probability sampling under restricted sampling technique may result in Convenience Sampling Under unrestricted sampling technique may result in the following Snowball Purposive x Judgment x Quota
