Better Dead Than Red: The 1950s Red Scare

Junior Division Website

Our group made the decision to study the 1950s Red Scare - Americas reaction to communism. We immediately took interest to the topic, and felt as if we had some background information from previous years. We looked through several articles to get an idea of the topic, before conducting our decision. The research portion of the project was done over a time period of six to eight weeks. We delegated responsibility to each member, and we each had specific sub topics to research. We gathered paraphrased notes, before pulling all of the parts together into written paragraphs. We cited every source we used for information, images, audio, video, websites, books, encyclopedias, etc. We found this method of separate research to be the most effective. As far as our project, we came to the consensus to create a website. All four of our members have experience with html coding, and graphics could be considered an area we all exceed in. A webpage also meant we could access the work at home from separate computers, making it easy to work on individually. Using nhd.weebly, we picked a starting template, customized the coding, and began on the written portion of the website. To put our project together, we took our research and turned it into an appropriate, reworded paragraph format. As a group, we came up with broad topics that we thought were most important to the Red Scare, (ie. people, causes, etc.) and branched them out into sub topics. Each member was once again given several different topics to complete closing research on, write out, finalize and publish onto the website. After the majority of the writing portion was finished, we took visuals into effect. Images, videos, timeline and themes were taken into the project giving an extra wow factor. Our project consisted of long hours, much research, deep thinking and of course teamwork, and could not have been completed without the dedication and focus of the group. Since November, it has been a first priority project and experience, thus resulting in our group website.
